Core RE supports students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. By studying religions in the context of the cultures they grew from, students are exposed to the themes that tie human beliefs and practices together in our complex, modern world. We aim to foster curiosity and enthusiasm in our students, so they can strive to be critically minded, analytical and empathetic in their engagement with the differing views of the wider world as they grow. Through our thoughtfully designed and academically rigorous programme of study, our students are invited to study different religious and non-religious worldviews, as well as analyse and engage in debate with real-world arguments and issues.
Year 7: 2 lessons per fortnight
Students begin at Churston by learning about the most influential religions of our time. Following this, students use their knowledge of religions to engage in debates about the environment and learn about religious pilgrimage sites around the world. We finish the year by studying religious art and encourage all students to create their own works of art, reflecting the religions and themes studied over the year.
Year 8: 3 lessons per fortnight
The Year 8 scheme of learning has a strong focus on the impact of philosophy, ethics and religion on the world. Students begin Year 8 by reflecting on peace and conflict in the world today, writing an essay on the ethics of warfare. Students also engage in debate on human rights and the value of life. Students will also study different beliefs about Jesus of Nazareth and conduct an in-depth study of Hinduism.
Year 9: 1 lesson per fortnight
In Year 9, students are given more independence in choosing, researching and presenting projects on some of the lesser-known religions of the world. Students then study the philosophy of happiness and finish by studying differing approaches to death in global cultures.
