Finding Secrets When Reading
All students who meet with our Literacy Specialist, Mrs. Loop, for extra reading support will receive a set of flip cards with phonics secrets on them from the Secret Stories. When students come to unknown words while they are reading, they need to first identify the phonics secrets in the word and then tap their sounds. Click below to see a brief message from Mrs. Loop about how to use these flip cards at home.

Secret Stories Fun with Jack Hartmann
Below you will find the most popular "Secret Stories" that are found in many words that we read and write in kindergarten and first grade. There are words that are considered "rule breakers" if you don't know the "secret" rules. These "secrets" assist our students with reading and writing the majority of words.
They drive really fast and have to slam on the breaks which makes their sound in words like in her, first, and fur
They are really cool and put their thumb up and say the long A sound when they are in words like in say and they
These friends play a little too rough and someone always gets hurt which will help you remember their sound like in loud and how. Sometimes ow can also the long O sound like in show.
You find him at the end of words or syllables like in happy, by, and myself
These letters are in love which helps you remember the sound they make when you see them together in words like saw and launch
AEIOU are vowels and they each can make 2 sounds.
When you see these letters in words they make the soft c and soft g sound like in cents, city, Macy, germ, giant, gypsy
If there is a letter between a vowel (AEIOU) and Mommy E she will not make a sound but the vowel will say its name like in cake, here, like, home, and cube.
