Master of Science Program in Physical Therapy

In 2004, the Department of Physical Therapy under the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences at Chulalongkorn University launched a Master of Science in Physical Therapy program. This is a response to public health policies that try to make sure everyone is healthy and that everyone has a good quality of life.

Physical therapists are medical professionals who play a significant role in the prevention of damage and disease, as well as in the promotion of people's health by providing treatment and rehabilitation after sickness so that the patient can return to normalcy. Nevertheless, each facet of a patient's difficulties is frequently distinct and intricate. In order to deliver the most successful physical therapy services, it is important to rely on a physical therapist with specialized knowledge in physical examination, problem analysis, and the development of a treatment plan that involves the use of a variety of techniques. Due to time restrictions and a broad curriculum, a bachelor's degree is, nonetheless, insufficient for students' advancement. Physical therapists will be able to deliver the most effective treatments if they have particular abilities. Additionally, it stimulates research to generate new knowledge that is beneficial to patient care and leads to increased efficiency.

The Department of Physical Therapy, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Chulalongkorn University, has used the aforementioned socioeconomic context and the 20-year National Strategic Plan (2017-2036) as a conceptual framework in the construction of a Master of Science program. This program seeks to cultivate physical therapists with superior knowledge and abilities in physical therapy. This is consistent with the development goal to make Thailand a medical hub in Southeast Asia and to train physical therapists with superior knowledge, competence, and abilities to manage health problems in seniors. It is likely that this kind of worker will be in high demand in the near future.

The Department of Physical Therapy at the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences at Chulalongkorn University deems it appropriate to expand education in order to gain knowledge and expertise in specialization by proposing to enhance the Master of Science curriculum in physical therapy, a specialized physical therapy course, by dividing the study into six fields, including: 1) Musculoskeletal Physical Therapy, 2) Manipulative Physical Therapy, 3) Neurological Physical Therapy, 4) Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Physical Therapy, 5) Pediatric Physical Therapy, 6) Geriatric Physical Therapy.

The Master of Science Program in Physical Therapy at Chulalolongkorn University has been revised several times up until this point in time. The latest is the curriculum revision in 2023.

Doctor of Philosophy Program in Physical Therapy

In 2009, the Department of Physical Therapy under the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences at Chulalongkorn University established a Doctor of Science in Physical Therapy program. This is due to the department's expectation of a severe shortage of physical therapy researchers in the near future. Until it becomes the only hindrance to the expansion of physical therapy, as it should be, the department has skilled and competent personnel, an excellent site for teaching and research, and cutting-edge research equipment. Therefore, it makes sense to broaden the Ph.D. program to promote the discovery and development of new knowledge and technologies in physical therapy that suit the future demands of society.

These courses are introduced based on the following ideas and considerations: It is projected that Thailand's physical therapy advancements would be comparable to those of other developed nations. In addition to needing a physical therapist with vast knowledge and skill, it demands research to create and produce new knowledge, including the synthesis and application of constantly increasing knowledge andtechnology, as well as the creation and application of new knowledge. In light of this, it will provide the most efficient and cost-effective physical therapy treatments feasible, while having restricted resources.
