Keep a Routine!
Kids (and adults!) benefit from consistency. Having a predictable routine builds a sense of safety and security and reduces anxiety. This is particularly important during times of stress.
Here are some tips for establishing a routine during our school closure:
1. Stick to consistent wake-up and bedtimes.
2. Have meals and snacks around the same time each day.
3. Set aside a time and place for work.
4. Schedule breaks to allow for play and relaxation.
Many children also benefit from a visual schedule to help them follow their routine. For older children, this could be a simple checklist. For younger children, try a picture schedule!
Managing Screen Time
Studies show that excessive screen time can negatively affect the development of social skills, self-regulation, and motor skills, as well as disrupt sleep. The following articles provide an overview of the research on screen time and recommendations for appropriate technology use in childhood.
Temper Tantrums
Emotions run high during times of crisis, and little things that didn't used to bother your child may set them off unexpectedly. Remember to take plenty of breaks from instruction during the day and consider incorporating some of the activities on the "Activities & Resources" subpage into your child's daily activities.
