How do we become Media Literate?

The 6th grade media literacy curriculum helps students understand their media-rich society and how it sometimes exploits them. Students explore the following questions:

  • What are the media vehicles through which media messages are conveyed?

  • Why are media messages created?

  • Who is responsible for media messages?

  • Who created this message?

  • What is a target audience?

  • Why is this message being sent?

  • How does the target audience influence the content of the message?

  • How does the message influence the target audience?

  • What creative techniques are used to attract my attention?

  • What lifestyles, values and points of view are presented in, or omitted from, this message?

  • How have different media evolved over time?

  • What will media look like in the future?

  • What is your responsibility as an active participant in contributing to the media world?

Reflection, Self-Evaluation and Assessment:

Students regularly reflect and self-evaluate with teacher support, using customized rubrics that allow them to set goals and reflect on their learning and outcomes.

Additionally, 6th grade students receive lessons in Digital Citizenship and Cyber Safety from their 8th grade peers.
