Reusing
Reusing
Reusing is an important part of sustainability because it reduces the strain on valuable resources, such as fuel, forests and water supplies to produce more of what we already have, and helps safeguard wildlife habitats.
Reusing an item several times before repurposing or recycling it prevents waste.

Reusing Initiatives:
Pupils are encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle into school and there are accessible water fountains and/or dispensers in every building. The location of Water Fountains / Water Machines is published around the School so everyone knows where to find them.
Rather than simply buy new furniture, our Estates Caretaking team will store as much unwanted classroom and office furniture as they can to enable us to reuse of unwanted items wherever feasible.
A lot of drama and production sets are made from materials which are recyclable, such as metal, wood, glass, etc. and if we can't store these for next time we will recycle the materials accordingly.
At the end of each year any Departments which are having a clear out of their store cupboards can rehome their unwanted exercise books, pens, folders and other stationery in other Departments. By reusing existing stock, it not only reduces unnecessary new purchases, but also avoids the unwanted items being thrown away.
We all have things in our wardrobes which we don't wear any more and thanks to the CHS Parents Association we have a well-established clothing collection from School which can be sorted into 150 different types of clothing and exported all over the world. These donations supply second hand stores or market stalls and provide valuable employment for importers, warehouse staff, transport companies and stall holders as well as affordable clothes for local people.
More information about the Bag2School campaign can be found here, and click here for more about the Parents Association.
The School runs an online Pre-Loved Uniform shop, where parents can buy second-hand CHS uniform and sports kits. Items to be donated can be left at Main Reception in a bag clearly labelled as ‘Donated uniform - for Pre-Loved’ and all proceeds go to fund School bursaries.
Our School Library works with Better World Books to sell withdrawn stock so they can be re-used, re-sold or recycled with sale money contributing to literacy programmes all over the world. Weeding [the professional term for library stock clearance] is a vital part of running a relevant, up-to-date library. CHS often receives donations, that whilst being in good condition, won’t really be used or may be inappropriate for a school library. Books cannot usually be recycled in the conventional ‘paper bins’ due to the glue and coverings so sending them to a company like Better World ensures that books are kept out of landfill and that literacy programme benefit.
