Step 2 - Choose one of the following 'Plus 1' options
Our Plus 1 options give you the opportunity for academic stretch and breadth which will be hugely beneficial to you, be it for university, an apprenticeship or applying for jobs after Year 13. They will develop key skills outside of A-level subjects with an opportunity to focus on an area of interest to you. In addition, EPQ, Core Maths and the Arts Award carry UCAS points and may be directly useful for university applications.
We believe that most students would benefit from studying one of the 'Plus 1' qualifications above.
A Fourth A-level Subject
Some students may wish to begin a 4th A-level subject instead of a '+1' listed above. This may be because you do not yet know which 3 subjects you would like to take to A-level or because you are interested in a wider breadth of subjects. However, it should be noted that in most cases you will only continue with four subjects for the duration of Year 12 and not receive a qualification. A small number of students do continue with 4 A-levels into Year 13 - this is most common if you are studying Maths and Further Maths.
Some students may wish to begin a 4th A-level subject in addition to an EPQ. We would advise that students should only do this if they have met one or more of the following criteria:
you have achieved over 70 points at GCSE
you wish to study Further Maths and potentially continue 4 A-levels into Year 13.
Step 3 - Choose your Pathway
We understand the importance of this decision which is why we recommend that you research your option choices on this Site carefully. At interview we expect to see that you have taken the time to reflect on your achievements so far, your skill set, your interests and ambitions and understand why you are making your option decisions. We will provide as much guidance as we can during your interview, including pointing out grade requirements and the advantages (or limitations) of your choices.
However, as an external candidate we will need to rely on you to demonstrate you have thought carefully about your decisions. We do recognise that occasionally students may wish to review their choices, this is why we ask you to confirm your choices if an offer is made and why we may contact you again to review these decisions with you.
The Sixth Form offers a wonderful opportunity for you to expand your academic horizons and study a new subject, you just need to make sure you have completed your research and you understand what this subject entails. If every option you take is a new subject we would want to understand your reasons and we would want you to understand the unique challenges you may face.
Financial assistance is available in the Sixth Form. To be considered you must ensure that you have completed our Financial Assistance application before the 9 December 5pm deadline. This is a detailed document which you will need to dedicate some time to completing. You may wish to mention that you are applying for financial assistance at your interview if you think it would help us understand your reasons for wanting to join us.
At CHS we believe it is important that you primarily take a subject to advanced level if you enjoy it and you are good at it. We also understand that some subjects will help you towards your chosen career path, but these are relatively few, for example medicine. It is important to us that you enjoy your next two years and therefore we recommend that you make the best choices for you.
Experience has taught us that Core Maths as a 'plus one' can often help students studying Business, Economics, Psychology and Biology. Generally, we do not recommend students take only 1 Science, but we recognise that it can be a complementary subject for certain subjects/careers. This is why it is crucial that you have thought carefully about what is best for you and your future before your interview. Remember, our Sixth Form Team will be here to advise you and answer any of your questions if you are unsure.
We hope this Site is helping to establish if CHS is the 'right fit' for you. We are always delighted to welcome new students to join our dynamic, inclusive and caring School and our Sixth Form Team works hard to ensure that all students feel fully integrated.
We aim to make the process of applying to CHS as smooth and enjoyable as possible; but if you need any further information or assistance please do not hesistate to contact the Admissions Team on 0161 488 3345 or email Admissions@chschool.co.uk
I hope to meet you soon.
