It is important that your child develop positive study skills early in their academic career. The study skills and habits your child develops in fourth grade will be the study skills and habits that follow them through the rest of their academic career. The earlier you can get your child in a routine with positive study skills will help set your child up for academic success in the future.
At School:
1. Fill out your assignment notebook with everything that is written on board.
(Don't shorten the name of your assignment, although you may know what it means, your parents won't.)
2. Gather all your books and assignments that need to be completed for the next day.
3. Put all notes or information that needs to go home in your take home folder.
4. Make sure everything makes it in your backpack at the end of the day.
At Home:
1. Take a small break after school and eat a quick snack.
2. Find a quiet area to work that has few distractions.
3. Get all of the supplies you will need to complete your assignment.
4. Try to work on your own, only ask for help if you are really stuck.
(Remember this is your assignment not your mom or dad's assignment)
5. Have mom, dad, older brother or sister, check over your work.
(This would be a great time to have them sign your assignment notebook also)
6. Show your assignment notebook to a parent and get their signature.
(It is not your parents job to find your assignment notebook and sign it for you.)
7. Put your books and assignments back into your folder and backpack. Place your backpack close the the door so that you don't forget it.
Parents: Please don't sign your child's assignment notebook if they don't have their work completed, or ready to go back to school.
