12th Grade Economics, also know as Principles of Economics, is a required course for graduation and is worth five (5) Credits. Per the California H-SS Framework "students will... master fundamental economic concepts, applying the tools (graphs, statistics, equations) from other subject areas to the understanding of operations and institutions of economic systems. Studied in a historic context are the basic economic principles of micro- and macroeconomics, international economics, comparative economic systems, measurement, and methods."
Throughout this one semester course required for graduation we will work to explore and find answers to the following questions:
How is economics about scarcity, investment, growth, employment, competition, protection, entrepreneurship, and markets?
What is captialism? What are its benefits and problems?
What does it mean to be financially literate?
How do worldwide markets affect me?
As students navigate through the course we will be reading our course textbook, Economics by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company (2018), to garner application, background knowledge and context in addition to selected readings from grade appropriate resources. In addition, just as with U.S. History the primary goal will be to prepare students for life expectations outlined in the C3 Framework of College, Career and Civic Life readiness and preparedness.
When finished with the course students should be able to have a general understanding of what the study of Economics is, why thinking like an economist and studying human choices and behaviors matters, and lastly, how students and citizens lives are connected to the principles of mirco and macro economics respectively.
