Reading Comprehension Strategies
VISUALIZE: Imagine what is happening in the text you are reading. Make connections!
RETELL: Using your own words, try to retell the story or text to someone.
SEQUENCE: Be sure to retell your story in the order things happen. Use words like first, next or last.
QUESTION: While you read; ask questions to help you understand.
CHARACTERS, SETTING & PURPOSE: Who is in your story, what is happening and why are the events taking place?
RE-READ: Go back and read the story again to get a better understanding, clarify meaning or get a new perspective.
MAIN IDEA & KEY DETAILS: Identify the purpose of the text and how is it supported.
CAUSE & EFFECT: What happened and how did the story change by the event?
COMPARE & CONTRAST: How are things similar or different?
POINT OF VIEW: Who is telling the story? The book could have been written from a different perspective and you need to know who is telling the story.
