Mission Statement: Chico High School's Musical Theatre Program prides itself on creating a supportive and exciting environment in which students can grow as performance artists and as human beings. We strive to foster group cohesion, while at the same time encouraging individual growth. We believe in the good that exists within all students, and we strive to make them conscience of this quality through all they achieve within our program, which runs on positivity, respect, teamwork, & responsibility.
Chico High School, located in Northern California, is proud to have recently reinstated its musical theatre program, offering classes to students with any level of experience. In three years we have gone from 17 to 90 diverse, amazing students of all levels and abilities in our program! Our mission is to provide students of all backgrounds and skill-levels an opportunity to experience the craft of musical theater, whether participating as a performer, being a part of the production team or a member of the technical crew. Our goal is the cultural enrichment and education of students by introducing them to and developing a life-long appreciation for musical theater. Recent productions include Les Miserables, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Seussical, Guys and Dolls, and Singin' In The Rain. Top achievements for our program include the ITheatrics JTF Excellence in Acting Award in both 2017 and 2019, and in 2018 Director Jenise Coon was one of 7 musical theatre teachers Nationwide to receive the Freddie Gershon Fellowship.
There are hundreds of jobs in the arts, and so many former Chico High students have found careers in these industries. From casting agents in Hollywood to professsional musicians to actors to directors & producers. Meet just a few of our choral and theatre arts graduates!
The Junior Theater Festival (JTF) is the world’s biggest and best celebration of young people performing musical theater. JTF brings together student musical theater troupes from all over the world for a weekend of musical theater mayhem and madness. Each troupe performs fifteen minutes from a Broadway Junior show for adjudication by a panel of musical theater experts. The weekend also features professional development for teachers, workshops for students and parents, a New Works Showcase featuring new musical adaptations soon to be released and concludes with a grand finale concert headlined by Broadway’s best! The Junior Theater Festival is sponsored by Playbill, Disney Musicals and Music Theatre International. Students enrolled in Musical Theatre at CHS are welcome to attend this optional event which takes place every February.
