First watch from the outside, then participate some
Giving participants a chance to see how a game or activity is done before becoming involved can give them the confidence and understanding needed to succeed
For some kids, participating for half of the game is all that they will be able to do, and that is a success!
Find Sensory Friendly Areas (extra space, quieter, less distracting)
Sensory overload is common during break times where many kids are together in one area. Finding a quieter space can prevent overstimulation
Some participants may be able to focus on an activity more if they have more space to work
Reiterate rules with your participant, consistently check (and double check) for understanding
Always check that your participant understands the rules or instructions of an activity before beginning. This will make sure they are being set up for success
Break down complex instructions
Many individuals with developmental differences struggle with complex instructions. Break down the rules/instructions into simple phrases.
Write down rules/instructions into a list so participants can visually comprehend the order
Help your participant communicate socially with peers
If your participant is struggling with communication, help ask questions, give leading questions, or demonstrate how to answer questions from peers
Always listen to conversations being had and make sure participants maintain appropriate social topics
Fine Motor Skill assistance
Some participants will benefit from assistance with cutting paper, gluing, folding, or other fine motor skill tasks
Some participants will benefit from assistance with catching/throwing or using other game equipment
