This training has provided you with valuable information and guidance for your experience as an After School Program Mentor. Here are a few key takeaways. 

Be SAFE! 

• • Children must always be supervised by staff. If sending children out of your supervision, make sure that the staff member they are going to acknowledges the child will now be under their care.

  • Follow and enforce program/school rules.

  • Limit physical interactions with children. Do not pick them up or let them sit on your lap.

  • No use of personal cell phone while working.

Be RESPONSIBLE! 

• • You are a role model. Be mindful of your attitude, clothing, language, and most of all, your leadership. "Children are great imitators, so give them something great to imitate."  

  • Communication is key!

    • • Always use a positive tone of voice.

      • Schedule changes or absences must be communicated in advance with the Site Coordinator.

      • Communicate all behavioral, safety concerns, and injuries to the Site Coordinator immediately. 

  • Use planning time wisely and turn assignments in on time.

  • Create professional boundaries. 

  • Respect the school. Always leave the facility cleaner than you found it.  

Be FUN!

• Smile and be silly!

• Build positive and trusting relationships with children and staff.

• Interact/participate with the children. Have fun playing with them on their level!

• Create fun activities for the kiddos.

• Reinforce positive behaviors.
