Free Play is a great time to facilitate games with children of all ages. If you see children are bored or looking for something to do, you can start a group game such as Kickball, Knock Out, Four Square, Handball, etc.
Follow and enforce school rules for playground use. This includes not climbing up the slide, must be on bottom when swinging, not walking on top of the monkey bars, etc.
Spread out and engage with students/ no leader clumping
Maintain back to the wall concept
Address safety and behavioral concerns as they arise
100% of your attention should be on the children. This is the time of day that the majority of accidents/incidents occur and you need to be actively supervising.
During the last 30 minutes of the day while children are at free play, some staff will supervise the children, and others will be assigned cleaning or planning time.
All staff need to help clean the facility at the end of each day. You are responsible for leaving the room cleaner than you found it. This includes sweeping, wiping tables, picking up and taking out trash, taking care of lost and found, and checking restrooms for cleanliness. All items should be neatly put away and program area is to be left tidy.
Before clocking out for the day, staff should prep for the next day. Be sure to review planning, gather materials, restock homework bins, etc. Check in with your site Coordinator and review any concerns or challenges from the day.Â
