FAQs

What is Google Classroom?

Google Classroom is a platform that securely syncs with our Google Education Suite. Because each scholar has a Chicago Collegiate email assigned to them, they can use this secure login to access their Chromebook, their virtual classroom, and their emails. Teachers are able to create assignments in the virtual classrooms, assign due dates, link classwork and other features, etc. If your scholar needs help accessing their classroom, please reach out to their operations coordinator:

What is Zoom?

Zoom is a secure platform for teachers and scholars to engage live in virtual classrooms. While the remote space can be intimidating at first, we encourage scholars to turn on their cameras on their Chromebooks and engage with their fellow scholars. Teachers have the ability to only admit students who are supposed to be in the classroom, which helps avoid distractions during the lessons. Additionally, we have invested in technology that works with Zoom to help build engaging lessons for students, which prevents them from just sitting passively during class time.

How do I know when my scholar should be online?

All scholar schedules are posted in the grade level sections of our remote hub. Additionally, if your scholar signs in to classroom.google.com they can find their class schedule there as well. If you need additional support, please call 773.536.9098 and one of our clerks can help you get started.

What if my scholar's Chromebook is not functioning properly?

Prior to distribution, all Chromebooks were sanitized and checked to ensure they were functioning. Many of our devices are brand new as well. That said, we know a device can stop working, the charger may die, etc. If you experience any issues with your device, please reach out to our operations coordinators, who can help you with next steps.

Please note: Per the agreement that all families signed when they picked up their device, if there is neglect or intentional damage associated with the device, a $300 fee will be assessed and must be paid before a new device will be issued. We have devices for all of our scholars, but the supply is not unlimited, so we must assess this fee to ensure we keep our fleet in full working order.

What communication can I expect while in Remote Learning?

Chicago Collegiate Weekly
This email is sent every Saturday at 9 a.m. from info@chicagocollegiate.org. It includes important updates from the school and surrounding community.

RoboCalls and RoboTexts
For important updates, reminders, and requests from our Collegiate community, you will likely receive a text or a recording call from the school. This helps ensure we are able to reach a large audience in a short period of time.

Calls from your Scholar's Advisor
Each scholar is assigned an advisor who will check in on your family and your scholar at minimum once per week. Our hope is to create a strong partnership with the advisor who can help ensure your scholar is successful during this time of remote learning.

If you are not receiving any of our communications, please call 773.536.9098 and ensure we have the correct email on file for you.

What if I have questions about Diverse Learner support?

Please reach out to our case worker Derrick Pyle.

How do I know how my scholar is performing academically and behaviorally?

At supply pick up, all families received log in information to the two platforms below. If you need help accessing either of these platforms, please reach out to your operations coordinator:

POWERSCHOOL (Login here)
You can access your scholar's grades for assignments and see their attendance data via this program. It is accessible both via computer and phone/tablet. As teachers grade and assign student work, you can see their progress.

KICKBOARD (Login here)
You can communicate with your scholar's teachers via this platform and also see how they are performing behaviorally while online.

Can my scholar access unsafe information while on the internet?

While we can't control all aspects of the Internet, all school-issued Chromebooks have rigorous content filters that prevent them from accessing sensitive information while in use via a platform called GoGuardian. Please note, we are able to access any device at any time, and see history of each device if any issues surface, including if a scholar attempts to access sensitive information and is blocked. If we have concerns about content a scholar is accessing, we will reach out to families.
