paying for college
Make sure to educate yourself on the cost of college now so you can have a plan in place for next year!
College Applications
To be considered for academic scholarships each college and university has a deadline. Generally, the deadline is November 1st for larger universities. It is a good idea to apply early to be considered for these scholarships and perhaps be invited to compete for additional money.
You will not be denied acceptance because you wait to apply, only if you miss the final deadline, which is generally March 1st.
Each college has a website with extensive information where you will find their application and answers to any questions you may have.
Applications can generally be done online through the school's website.
There will be a fee to apply to many colleges. If you qualify for free or reduced lunch you can get the application fee waived. Contact Mrs. Volk for the fee waiver paperwork.
If you don't qualify for a fee waiver, you can contact the admissions office directly and request that your fee be waived. Also check to see if your college participates in the free application month of October.
Common App is a non-profit college access organization that helps students apply to college every year.
The Common App allows you to complete one application and use it to apply to multiple schools.
There are two main parts you fill out: a set of common questions and each college’s own specific questions.
APPLICATION ESSAYS
A FEW THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND:
Make sure to answer the essay prompt!
Choose to write about something that sets you apart from the rest of the applicants.
Explain why you would be a good fit at the university or college you are applying to. College admissions departments want to accept students who they feel will be successful at their school.
Make sure to have someone (English Teacher or Counselor/Advisor) read your essay and give feedback!
Letters of Recommendation
You may be required to submit Letters of Recommendation from a teacher, coach or acquaintance as part of your college (or scholarship) application.
Make sure to ask for your letter of recommendation early!
The following resources may make the process easier for you and your recommender:
