We are in Module 4 of HMH. Below are our focus standards.
Compare and contrast the most important points presented by two texts on the same topic. (RI.2.9) *
Determine the meaning of words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 2 topic or subject area. (RI.2.4)
We are focusing on comparing and contrasting the most important points in two text on the same topic. The author's point is what the author thinks or feels about a topic. We are working on identifying the author's point and finding details throughout the book to support the author's point. For example, we started our learning with reading a book title "What If You Had Animal Teeth?!". The author's point was that animals' teeth help them do important things. We went through the story and found evidence of what animals use their teeth for. We are doing this using a Venn Diagram and Double Bubble organizing maps. A way to support this learning is finding two stories on the same topic, identifying the author's point, then comparing and contrasting them.
We are supplementing our learning with our main standard by discussing the meaning of words we may not know and how we can use tools like context clues to help s determine the meaning of the word.
Your child can access Waggle and HMH at home. To log in, first go to MyCherryCreek. Your student should know their username and password. Send me a message if they do not. From there search HMH. There they can do the reading assignments or head to Waggle. NONE of this is assigned homework, just extra resources.
*We do not use the skills written under Word Play. Our phonics skills come from a different curriculum.*
