Course Description

This course is a year-long course intended for freshman in the ED/Reach program. The objective is to build written language skills, vocabulary development, and reading comprehension while also exposing students to a variety of literature.


Students Will:

  • Read and understand a variety of material.
  • Write and speak to a variety of purposes and audiences.
  • Identify the different parts of speech, edit for grammar, write in complete sentences, capitalize punctuate and spell correctly on written assignments.
  • Write a 5 paragraph essay based on the 6 traits of writing.
  • Use reading and writing to define, identify, make predictions, and propose solutions.
  • Learn and practice various genres of writing
  • Participate in a Slam Poetry Unit and perform a poem in front of class.

Grading

Writing assignments will be graded using the 6 Traits of Writing rubric: organization, ideas, word choice, voice, sentence fluency, conventions.

Grades are calculated using a point system. Class participation, homework, group work, projects, tests, and citizenship are evenly weighted.
