Community College FAQs

Should I still complete the FAFSA?

Yes! Financial aid from the FAFSA can be applied to any accredited, not-for-profit institution of higher education. This includes community colleges and junior colleges. Apply for the FAFSA early, even if you have not yet applied. The FAFSA is open on October 1.

How do I know which school is the best fit for me?

Just like a 4-year university, it is recommended you visit the campus of each school in which you are interested. Other things to consider are programs offered/gtPathways, distance from home, housing availability (if necessary) and cost.

When should I apply to a community college or junior college?

Check institution websites for information about dates of application availability and application deadlines. Most community colleges will open their applications during the spring of your second semester of senior year of high school. Junior colleges generally open their applications in the fall of your senior year. You can apply into the summer following graduation, but we recommend you apply by 2nd semester of your senior year to be eligible for scholarships and financial aid. **Listen to announcements and postings on Schoology regarding App Days for local community colleges.

Can I transfer to a 4-year college/university from a community college/junior college?

Absolutely! This is why it is very important you still attend a senior conference with your counselor. Review the gtPathways link in this Schoology folder to explore different options for Guaranteed Pathways in your intended major. You can also complete your general education requirements then transfer to a 4 year college to begin a chosen moajor.

How do the concurrent enrollment credits I have earned at CT transfer to 2-year colleges?

Any concurrent enrollment credits you have earned should transfer to community colleges or junior colleges in the state of Colorado. Always speak to an admissions representative at the college level about CE credits; he/she can also help you through the process of having your transcript showing CE credits from CCA or ACC sent to the institution you will be attending. If you have earned 12 or more CE credits by the time you graduate from CT, you may be eiligible for the ASCENT program. Contact your counselor if you are interested in more information about ASCENT.

Guaranteed Transfer Pathways

"GT Pathways courses, in which the student earns a C- or higher, will always transfer and apply to GT Pathways requirements in AA, AS and most bachelor's degrees at every public Colorado college and university. GT Pathways does not apply to some degrees (such as many engineering, computer science, nursing and others listed here). You should always seek advising from the appropriate advisor at the college or university you plan to attend to ensure you are selecting the appropriate coursework for your degree and that it will apply to those degree requirements. This checklist and these guidelines can help high school students plan their AP, IB and Concurrent Enrollment courses. "
