THE SEASON EVALUATION TIME IS HERE!
Between now and January 31st, if you're a freshman or new player to the program, the window is open for your initial evaluation. Contact Coach Smith to set up a time.
Read everything below carefully to get the full picture of the process.
Tryouts are held in two phases for new players to the program.
The season begins the week of February 23rd, yes it's cold, so bundle up in your best winter golf wear!🥶
HARSH REALITY: Because we don't have our own facility such as a gym or field on school grounds, we have to adhere to the strict, yet understandable rules set forth by local golf courses. As a program we risk losing our privilege to utilize courses during the season if players who are not ready to play on a regulation course slow public play. The purpose of the evaluation is to ensure that players have the experience and capabilities to play a round of golf within an appropriate amount of time either in a practice round or a tournament.
So unfortunately, players who aren't able to meet the standards of the Evaluation will not be able to move on to the formal tryout.
Phase #1 - Evaluation
During January, interested players who feel they are ready to tryout will need to go through a swing and short game evaluation to ensure they are ready for tournament golf. This involves range time, short game shots and putting.
Players are NOT expected to be perfect by any means, but they do need to demonstrate the following minimal skills:
Hit straight drives consistently 175 yards minimum
Hit a wood or hybrid consistently off of the ground with no tee
Hit a club of choice 150 yards accurately at a target
Hit a club of choice 100 yards accurately at a target
Demonstrate two different types of short-game shots from the apron or fringe
Be able to putt accurately into a six-foot ring from 25 feet away
Use these standards as a rough guide to help you prepare! Again, you're not expected to be perfect every shot, but we are looking for consistency over a series of shots.
Players who are able to demonstrate the list above will be invited to move on to Phase #2.
Phase #2 - Tryouts
Phase Two will begin the week of February 23rd. Players who were on the team previously will also be trying out at this time.
Players will play rounds after school and be ranked based upon their scores. It's expected that players are able to keep an accurate scorecard of their own score and an assigned playing partner's score. Players are randomly audited to ensure accuracy. Perfection is expected with scoring as we want to maintain our reputation as an honest program.
Because weather plays such a big part this time of year, we can only assure everyone that the final team will be set by Spring Break at the latest.
In keeping with tradition, the freshman with the lowest aggregate score at the end of tryouts will receive one spot on the team for the season. This is regardless of where that low freshman finished at the end of tryouts.
Additionally, returning seniors will need to be ranked in the top ten by the end of tryouts in order to guarantee a roster spot.
Probable Tryout Courses: Kennedy West, Kennedy Babe Lind, Heather Gardens, Family Sports
** Although welcome at tournaments, parents or siblings may not be present during tryouts. **
As a coaching staff, we reserve the right to make all final decisions around the players on the final roster, size of roster, and all other matters during tryouts. All USGA and LPGA rules and regulations will be followed.
And it goes without saying... as a coaching staff the only part of our job that we don't like is when we have to cut players. We appreciate the time and effort you put into getting ready for the season!
