To grasp how an individual's base pay is determined within their position's established pay range, it's essential to understand the components of pay grades and pay ranges, which form the foundation of a pay plan (salary/wage schedule). To comprehend how jobs are categorized and grouped, it’s essential to understand the principles of job classification.
The Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act ensures that everyone gets paid fairly for doing similar work, regardless of their gender. It means that employers can't pay someone less just because of their sex or gender identity. The law also stops companies from asking about your past salary when deciding how much to pay you. Plus, it requires employers to be open about pay rates in job postings and to let employees know about job openings. This helps everyone understand what they can expect to earn and have equal opportunities for promotions.

When determining your pay rate within the position's established pay range, only your relevant job experience is considered. This relevant experience criteria are based on the specific duties, responsibilities, and requirements outlined in the job description. It's crucial to provide proper documentation of your relevant experience on your resume and application, as this is what Human Resources uses to set your pay.

Additional qualifications like education, certifications, licenses, and training beyond the job's minimum requirements do not affect your pay rate. For example, holding a Bachelor's degree for a job that requires only a high school diploma will not influence your salary.
Once you accept a position, your resume will only be reviewed again if you transfer to a different position or if there is a market study for that position.

After your initial placement within the established pay range, you will move through the range via cost of living adjustments (COLA) and market study adjustments. It’s important to note that additional qualifications, such as further education, certifications, licenses, training, or enhanced skills beyond the job's minimum requirements, do not affect your pay rate.
If you are at or above the pay range maximum, you will not be eligible for base pay increases until the pay range maximum is increased above your current pay rate, or you transfer to a position with a higher pay range. Your base pay rate will remain the same until the position's pay range surpasses your current pay. Pay ranges are updated annually based on market studies.
