Two of the main reasons students choose to cheat are pressure to do well and feeling overwhelmed. If you are experiencing anxiety and overwhelm to a degree that you are tempted to cheat, please communicate with me or a counselor (see below) to get help.

Violations of academic honesty in this class include the following:
Receiving help on labs without attribution. Sources of help that must be cited include other instructors, lab partners, tutors, websites, relatives, and friends. You do not need to cite me, the textbook, or course documents as a source.
Two or more students producing identical or extremely similar lab reports
Using chegg.com or a similar website (where human experts solve problems for you) at any time, even with attribution
A few clarifications include the following:
You are not banned from using ChatGPT or other AI on homework, though I strongly discourage its use. Note the following:
You must cite the fact that you used it (just as you must cite any other website).
You must accept the significant risk that it will give you wrong answers; I have checked. You are much better off using office hours, Slack, or properly vetted sources for help with homework.
You should assume that all work is open-book and open-note unless explicitly stated otherwise.
Every grade is subject to review and revision based on a violation of academic honesty, regardless of the time frame.
You may share the syllabus, tip sheets, lab instructions, and videos with whomever you wish. You may record or photograph me or my work during lecture, lab, or office hours for your personal use only.
You may not share my tests, homework questions, or solutions; this is considered a violation of academic honesty unless you are working with a tutor or another Chemeketa employee. You may not share writing, recordings, or photographs of other students during scheduled classes, office hours, or discussion without their permission; this is a violation of their privacy and I consider it classroom misconduct: chemeketa.edu/students/student-rights-responsibilities/
Vistors (children, prospective students, etc.) are welcome provided that they don't distract other students or me. I understand that sometimes there is an unforseeable child care situation and I would prefer that you show up with a kid (and try to make it work) instead of not showing up at all.
Community college students who seek out academic advising are more likely to meet their educational goals than those who do not. An advisor helps you develop your educational plan, select and register for classes, and prepare to transfer to a four year university. Academic advisors also help you understand college procedures and identify helpful resources. Academic advising is available for any Chemeketa student.

If you do not know who your faculty advisor is or if you have changed your major, make sure you have notified the college of your current academic major or intent. Use the form titled “Change of Major/Academic Intent and Graduation Catalog.”(chemeketa.edu/students/student-forms/). Then, meet with a general academic advisor to have them assign you to the appropriate faculty advisor.
Students may sometimes experience challenges with mental health or other personal difficulties that create obstacles to academic success and daily living. Counselors can also help you clarify your academic and life goals so that you can identify and enter a career pathway or college major. Chemeketa Community College Counseling Services provides crisis intervention and free short-term counseling services to currently enrolled students encountering mental health, personal, and academic challenges that could interfere with their academic progress.
If you are in immediate crisis, our On-Call Counselor may be seen without an appointment Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm and is located in building 2, Room 115 or remote. The on-call counselor can be reached by calling 503-399-5120.
If you are experiencing a crisis when counseling services are not available, contact the Crisis Hotline (503-581-5535) or the Psychiatric Crisis Center (503-585-4949) which have qualified individuals to respond to mental health emergencies at all hours.
Appointments with counselors may be made online in MyChemeketa>Services> Counseling.
Accommodations are collaborative efforts between students, faculty, and Student Accessibility Services. If you have already been approved for accommodations and requested them for this term, both you and I receive a Letter of Accommodation by email. It is important that we discuss the accommodations as early in the term as possible. Students who believe they are eligible for accommodations but who have not yet obtained approval through Student Accessibility Services should contact them as soon as possible (see below).
Service animals or service animals in training are the only non-human animals allowed in buildings at Chemeketa. A service animal is defined as a dog that is specifically “trained to do work or perform tasks” that are directly related to a person’s disability. A service animal is not an emotional support animal or a pet.
I recognize that physicists have a shameful history of marginalizing and excluding people and their achievements, even more so than in many other fields. It is one of my professional goals to increase the diversity of the people taking physics courses, earning physics degrees, and becoming professional physicists. And I hope to create a welcoming, inclusive, and respectful environment for all of my students. This includes respecting your pronouns (should you wish to share them) and name (regardless of official records).
