If you are anything like me you might wonder how certain things work. I always wondered how teachers know what to teach. How do they know to help students who don’t understand what the teacher is teaching?
In order to get my questions answered I asked a teacher. And, no other than a Myers teacher, I asked Mrs. Kilpatrick to answer a couple questions. She told me each grade level has a guide for each subject. It maps out the weeks and what topics they have to cover. Afterwards all the grade level teachers meet to come up with how to make it fun. Sometimes they even have to do additional research.
Once the lesson plans are done they begin to teach. When a student needs help, she tries to see where they are having a problem understanding and starts there. She mentioned “I try to break a topic down, use manipulatives, and multiple ways of saying the same thing.” If needed she will go back to skills that were taught before and make sure a student understands those - so we can build up from there. No one can learn something new if you haven't learned the needed prior skills. It's like trying to run, when you haven't learned to walk. Check out the link “Jayden and Mrs. Kilpatrick’s news report
