America Avila

Hello, my name is America Avila. I’m part of the Class of 2021. This year I will be graduating and attending Central Washington University. During this project, I did the Medal of Honor Recipients. I learned about many different men and how their sacrifice of their life saved many others and how the Medal of Honor is the highest military award that is given because of acts of valor.

Bella Gatzemeier

Hi, I’m Bella Gatzemeier. I am a senior in the class of 2021. I helped make the “Women in World War II” page on this website. A few interesting facts I learned during this project: One, I learned how the war changed the livelihoods of Chicanas in America. Many made considerably more during the war since they filled the jobs that had been taken by (mainly) white men overseas. Two, I found it interesting how sought for working in the military was for some Chicanas. One of the women I wrote about wanted to join the war as a minor. Since her parents did not allow her to, she illegally joined.

Xitlali Cruz

Hi, I’m Xitlali Cruz. I am in the class of 2021 at Chelan High School. I plan on attending Stanford University in the Fall of 2021. I researched the 201st Fighter Squadron, also known as the Aztec Eagles. While researching, I learned how Mexicans worked with the Filipino and American Air Force during WWII. As a Chicana, it was interesting to learn that a Mexican Fighter Squadron existed since we are not taught about it in U.S history.

Alejandro Hernandez

My name is Alejandro Hernandez and I’m a senior at CHS of the Class of 2021. I will be attending the University of Washington this fall to major in Chemical Engineering. The non-medal winners of World War II was a fascinating topic for me because I wanted to highlight veterans who are usually overlooked. There were individuals who saved entire squadrons and endured dangerous conditions as a prisoner of war. I wished to give them recognition for their countless heroic actions.

Diego Martinez

About Me: I am a senior at Chelan High School. I enjoy playing soccer, working out, trying new food, and going on hikes. Next year I am planning on doing an electrician apprenticeship in Mount Vernon, WA.

What I did: I worked on the Mexican American Women In World War ll and added images on it.

What I've learned: One thing I've learned is the struggles Mexicans had to go through during the Great Depression. They were treated poorly and never given the same help as Americans. They starved and had no money because they didn't have jobs. Although reading about their struggles was frustrating, I enjoyed learning about it because it educated me more on Mexican and Mexican American history.

Aitza Uvalle

My name is Aitza Uvalle, I am a senior at Chelan High School. I was born and raised in Chelan Wahington. I plan to attend Wenatchee Valley College this coming fall to earn my AA degree. After two years, I plan to transfer to Eastern Washington University to obtain my bachelor's degree and possibly even my master's degree. What I enjoyed most about this course was learning more about who I am and where my roots lie. It was great to finally hear and learn about my people and their involvement in American society, which I wish many other people could experience. It is important to learn about racial and ethnic minorities to better understand America’s continuum of diversity.

Valeria Sanchez

For the World War II website project I helped work on the Women of WWII section. Something I learned while working on this project is that the mexican-american women worked on both the front lines and the home front. It was also interesting to just read about how a lot of the women who worked on the front lines were treated equally and not looked down on because of their race.

Luis Mendez

About me- I am a senior at CHS. I love the sport of soccer and play video games from time to time.

I am responsible for the following research of- Hero Street, William Sandoval, Frank Sandoval, Antonio Mendez, and Agustin Ramos Calero.

What I learned- It is pretty astonishing to find out how many Mexican-Americans contributed to World War ll. Not only in war, as well as in producing the food as farmworkers.

Caela Gonzalez

About Me: I am a Senior at Chelan High School and I plan on attending Spokane Community College and go into the Medical Diagnostic Sonography program. I was born in Wenatchee,WA but was raised my entire life in beautiful Lake Chelan!

I am responsible of: My partner America and I both worked on Medal of Honor.

What I learned: It was very interesting to learn stuff that I didn't even know about my own culture. I would show my own mom the homework we would have to do and she gave me a bunch of background stories of my great grandpa being involved in some Chicano history! I am glad I took this class!

Julissa Diaz

I’m Julissa Diaz, I'm currently a Junior in high school. (Class of ‘22) and currently in a Chicano Studies class. My topic was about WWII Mexican-American Veterans returning home after the war. Learning about the process of returning home for Mexican-American veterans was very interesting since it's not something usually taught in regular History classes.

Amairany Bravo

Hello, my name is Amairany Bravo and I am a junior at Chelan High school. I have learned many new things in Chicanos Studies that I did not know about at all. For this project I was in charge of the main page with my partner Neida Vargas. The first thing I found interesting in this project was how women were able to participate in WWll. During WWII many things started to change women were now independent and hardworking. Another interesting fact that I have learned was how Macario Garcia was the first Mexican immigrant to receive the medal of honor award. Before learning about WWll I did not know that Mexicans were honored and many of them were recognized for their great work and fighting during the war.

Neida Vargas

Hello, I am Neida Vargas, I am a junior attending Chelan High School. I was in charge of the main page with my partner Amairany as project managers! An important aspect I have taken from this class is being a Mexican-American and not knowing everything I thought I did. One event was that Mexican nationalist fough under the flag of the 'stripes and stars', as well as the Chicano movement focusing on certain groups and having different branches, education, rights, and agriculture workers. The reason I enjoyed learning about the Chicano movement, the agriculture aspect especially, has to do with my own background coming from an agriculture background myself as my father owns an apple orchard. I believe this is an important class that should continue being offered here in Chelan but as well advances to being taught in all the high schools in Washington, I personally believe it is important to teach the history as Mexico is the neighboring country of the United Sates.
