Whether your hopes are to go to a private college across the country or to the community college in your neighborhood, college can be expensive! DO NOT be discouraged by the price or limit your opportunities!

Financial aid can reduce the cost of college and open doors to a higher education.

The first mistake many students and families make is assuming they can’t afford college without first applying and understanding the resources available. Financial Aid comes from a multitude of sources, each with their own qualifications - so you don’t know unless you apply!

What is Financial Aid?

Financial Aid is an umbrella term that includes grants, work-study, loans and scholarships.

• GRANTS: Grants are free money and is considered “gift aid”. Grant are not intended to be paid back and are generally based on financial need as determined by the FAFSA.

• WORK-STUDY: Work-study is a program that provides part-time employment while enrolled in school to help pay for educational expenses. Work-study is flexible with class schedules and allows for students to get work experience, many times in their area of interest, while attending school.

• LOANS: Loan is money that must be paid back! However, if students apply early for financial aid AND apply for scholarships, they may get enough gift aid to avoid loans. • SCHOLARSHIPS: Scholarships is free money that can help students meet the cost of college. One main difference between scholarship and grants is where the money comes from. Generally grants come from either institutions directly and federal and state government.
