Dear Students and Parents/Guardians:

Welcome to Ms. Rose’s Social Studies class at Henry Beck Middle School. I am looking forward to an exciting year filled with learning and thinking opportunities.

          Classroom Materials due by Friday  9/11/26:   Every day, you are expected to bring your charged electronic device EVERY DAY, 1” binder, binder dividers, lined paper***, 2 pens (blue, black or purple only, we don’t write in red), 2 or more sharpened pencils, earbuds or headphones,  1 pencil sharpener, 1 highlighter. Binder color note-Social Studies asks for a blue binder, however if you already have a 1” binder of any color, I will love it; don’t buy a new one. 

***Please set up binder at home with 4 dividers labeled: Warm-Ups, Notes, Vocab, Maps  and lined paper in the Warm-Ups and Notes sections

School-wide Expectations:  Everyone at Beck is expected to demonstrate our shared core ethical values: perseverance, integrity, respect, responsibility, and compassion.  We will learn together what this means for us in the Social Studies classroom and throughout the school day.

Cell Phone Policy: The following procedures have been established for their use at Beck:

1. Before students enter the building, cell phones, smart watches, and earbuds are turned off and are put away.

2. Students are to have their phone put away in the lockers at all time. Usage of a cell phone, smart watches, or any other device from will result in a disciplinary write up.      

3. Photographs or videos are not allowed to be taken.

AI Use Policy: Students will use AI as a learning tool across a variety of assignments. As the year progresses, students are expected to use AI with growing independence, applying proper citations. AI is not to to be used on tests, quizzes and benchmark assessments. 

Bathroom Rules

1. Use between classes and during lunch

2. Not available during direct instruction, when students are learning new material. 

Grading Policy 

          Students will be assessed on various pieces which may include: independent and group projects, tests, quizzes, homework, and classroom participation.  Assessments will appear in both subjective and performance rubric style.  Project sheets, study guides, coaching rubrics and review sessions will provide students with clear expectations before assessments take place. 

Reassessment Policy

Beck’s reassessment policy is designed to promote a growth mindset.  It is our goal for all students to learn and understand the concepts presented and practiced in class.  We know that if you work hard, you will be successful.  With that in mind, students may reassess on all assessments (below a grade of 75). The highest score one could earn is 75% on a reassessment. So, study the first time!

Reassessment Action Plan

1. Students will make corrections to the assessment and seek extra help from me. 

2. Students will have up to 2 weeks to reassess. Students will arrange a time for a reassessment. The reassessment must be arranged by the student.

Homework Policy - you will find the homework on Google Classroom. Each homework is given a due date. If your homework is late, you will lose 10% of the total grade for each day it’s late. Certain homework assignments which we go over  the next day, will not have the opportunity to earn a late grade, they will earn zero credit. 

          Curriculum Content:  You will study the Ancient World, including early humans and the rise of river valley civilizations.  We will examine how these cultures developed, along with their various components (art, government, religion, economy and more). There will be an emphasis on geography and how it affected the development of each civilization.
