In this worrisome time of the Corona Virus, the Harte Speech/Language Therapists have prepared some home practice resources. These are to be used in conjunction with your child's Speech Folder/Notebook. During the school closure time period, you are asked to review the resources according to your child's individual goals and objectives.
The Speech and Language Department is here to help children who experience difficulty in one or more of the following areas:
Expressive Language: The ability to express and sequence ideas clearly using correct grammar and syntax (word order).
Receptive Language: The ability to understand spoken language, follow directions, and make sense of classroom instruction.
Phonological Awareness: Understanding that words are made up of sounds, sounds can be manipulated to change words, and sounds correspond to letters in print.
Articulation/Phonology: The ability to produce sounds in a manner appropriate to the child's age.
Fluency: The ability to communicate ideas without excessive repetitions and hesitations.
Voice: The ability to use correct voice volume, quality, and pitch.
Often difficulties in these areas can interfere with a child's educational progress, academically, emotionally, or socially. When one or more of these areas listed above begins to negatively impact a child's success in school, intervention may be necessary.

2019-2020 School Year
Welcome back to my returning students and a very special welcome to my students who are new to Bret Harte Elementary.
My name is Shirl Graves and I am one of the speech/language pathologists at Harte. I am happy to be working with your child this school year. This is my 36th school year as a school-based therapist and my 15th in Cherry Hill Public Schools. I also work part-time as a consultant with a special love of supervising graduate speech/language pathology students. My graduate interns this semester are Miss Megan Zeidler and Miss Cassandra Taylor who both attend LaSalle University.
I hold a BA in 'Teaching of the Speech & Hearing Handicapped' from Hofstra University in New York and an MA in 'Speech/Language Pathology' from The College of New Jersey. I live in Medford Lakes with my husband. We also have two grown sons. This past summer we adopted a rescue puppy named "Clyde" who keeps us laughing. I love to swim/float/kayak on our town's lakes. I enjoy reading, traveling, cooking, and yoga.
I am always thrilled to improve my students' communication skills. I am a proponent of the home-school connection providing each student with a Speech/Language Notebook. I ask that you review the work that your child has completed, review and/or assist in the completion of brief homework then sign where indicated.
I am happy to answer any questions you may have throughout the school year. My room is located on the lower level in room 116. I will do my best to keep in touch every other month or so. You may reach me by phone with extension 4608 or by email.
Sincerely,
Shirl Graves, MA, CCC/SLP

Welcome to Speech! My name is Wendy Kaltz, and I am one of the Speech and Language Therapists here at Bret Harte Elementary. I have been practicing as a Speech-Language Therapist for 30 years now- this will be my 5th year at Harte, and I am so excited as we begin the 2019-20 school year!
My family and I are originally from the Bucks County area in Pennsylvania. I have lived with my husband, Mitchell and daughter, Emily in Marlton for the past four years. We also have a son, Benjamin, who recently graduated from Temple University with a degree in Health Information Management. Our five cats, Graham, Sandy, Tiger, Rocky, and Rascal complete our family. Yes, your child will be hearing many stories of my feline friends during our year together! Outside of Speech Pathology, my interests include reading, yoga & exercise, the beach, swimming, spending time with friends & family, and of course, cats!
I absolutely love what I do every day. My goal is to help your child communicate to the best of his or her ability. I view Speech Therapy as a partnership, in which we will work together to help your child improve in his /her articulation, language or fluency skills. I have special expertise and interest in stuttering disorders and selective mutism.
Please feel free to reach out to me if I can be of any assistance. I am looking forward to a wonderful year together!
