It Means More Than Just That...

Someone's culture is not a costume

Mission of the IMMTJT project

The mission of this project is to educate people on what cultural appropriation is. As well as the cultural and historical significance behind the thing they appropriating. One can appreciate somebody else's culture without being ignorant or insensitive.

What is Cultural Appropriation?

Cultural appropriation is when somebody, of a privileged culture, takes certain parts, of a marginalized, culture and perpetuates them in an unauthentic manner. This person benefits from certain parts of the culture and often other parts are viewed as disgusting or negative. The thing the person is appropriating becomes just a trendy costume and the cultural or spiritual significance is disregarded

It is important to hear BIPOC voices and perspectives on serious issues/topics. Watch the video to the left to hear how they define cultural appropriation.
