Class Overview

Technology is intervention by design.

In Soft Materials Technology students are given opportunities to explore design possibilities and learn about the limitations of soft materials to create outcomes which meet users’ needs, and that are Fit for Purpose.  The outcomes are being designed to solve an issue/problem/need, identified by the student.

This Technology course teaches students creative problem-solving, which is now considered one of the most valued skills employers are looking for in their prospective employees.  It will teach students how to use equipment and machines independently, as well as learning different sewing stitches and techniques.

Students will be encouraged to be creative in their designs and challenge themselves whilst following the Tech Practice process.

THESE ARE THE TWO MAIN TOPICS FOR THIS YEAR

Stunning Storage

Students develop an outcome to solve a storage issue.  This could be in the form of a wall-organiser, sports bag, cellphone cover, bumbag, device cover/protector, purse, wallet, grocery bag, glass case, shoulder carry bag, swim bag, peg or tool apron etc.

Creative Cushions

Students develop a pillow/cushion to solve an issue.  This could be related to travel-neck/head support, decoration for a particular room, back support, mini laptop/tablet knee table, pet bedding, sleeping comfort etc.

About me

Kia ora.

My name is Mrs Caroline Mayo and I have been teaching here at CHCH East School since 2002.  I spent 10 years teaching in the Primary sector (years 3-8) and then moved into Technology, teaching mainly Soft Materials (sewing) in 2012.

I spent my childhood in the Waikato (Cambridge), lived in Auckland for 15 years and moved to Christchurch with my husband and two sons in 2001.

I am passionate about the Arts, which is why I'm excited about encouraging you all to be creative with your designs, when working with fabrics, and seeing what amazing outcomes you can come up with.
