About the Program

The FLES (Foreign Language in Elementary Schools) Program here in Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools is truly an asset. Our students are exposed to a foreign language beginning in 1st Grade, which builds beginning proficiency and provides an excellent foundation for later language learning by activating the thinking processes involved in second language acquisition. Through the program, children are engaged in meaningful situations that encourage them to communicate in French.

Thematic Units:

Each thematic unit builds toward a single performance task which incorporates the skills mastered throughout the unit. Through these units, I incorporate vocabulary and grammar chunks through interactive games, songs, physical movement, and meaningful peer interactions. Learning French is fun!

Performance Tasks:

The performance task is an experience in which students must communicate for a purpose. These include reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Target Language. Here, students must use the language they've gained throughout the unit to communicate r in a real-life situation. This type of assessment truly engages the student and fully demonstrates his/her ability to communicate effectively.

Examples of Performance Tasks:

Interpretive: Fourth Grade students were tasked with reading a paragraph about a family and illustrating what they understood. At the end of the unit, we compared our before and after tasks to see how much we grew!

Presentational Speaking: Third grade students created videos about themselves. We do this often in class to document our growth throughout the school year.

Interpersonal: Students often communicate with a language learner of the same age in order to exchange information. Stay tuned for future Interpersonal Performance task videos!

Presentational Writing: As students gain proficiency and acquire the language, we incorporate short writing activities in French. Our Fifth Grade students even get a French Penpal! Stay tuned for future Presentational Writing tasks!
