At Scroggs, we teach content-related FLES (Foreign Language in Elementary Schools). The FLES model is one that leads to proficiency by young adulthood when followed by sequential instruction in middle and high school. We provide all second through fifth graders three classes per week and the first graders twice a week. During this time, we communicate almost exclusively in Spanish. Each lesson lays the foundation for the next, and over time, students gain confidence in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Welcome to Spanish with Sra. Ouazzani!

I am from Morocco, North Africa. I have a law degree in the French language. I came to the USA 22 years ago. I worked as a teacher assistant at Glenwood Elementary for seven years. Then, I went to NC Central University to get my teaching licensure in Spanish. This is my 11th year as a Spanish teacher at Scroggs.

I am married and I have three girls. Shayma is a junior at NCSU, Heeba is a junior at Carrboro High, and Maha is a fourth-grader at Scroggs. I love learning new languages and connecting with people from different cultures.

I am looking forward to working with you and your children. I appreciate my students taking the challenge to learn another language and other cultures and I am very excited to teach them and watch them grow and succeed. Let's keep working all together to make this year an amazing year!

Hello everyone, I am Mr. Pedro Varon and I teach Spanish here at Scroggs. I was born in the city of Cali in Colombia. I have been working in education for more than twenty years. I am very happy and proud to be here sharing my knowledge and culture with my students. I am a family man. I am married and have two beautiful daughters whom I love very much. I also have two pets, a cat and a dog. Being here has been like a dream come true.

I hope we can all have a great time this year learning a new language and getting to know a little bit about my country and culture. I have shared a video here to give you a glimpse of Colombia and a heart shaped hands image with the colors of the Colombian flag.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

  • First and second grade, we work on listening and speaking.

  • Around third grade, we introduce reading and writing.

  • Cultural awareness is infused throughout the units in the curriculum. Each grade focuses on a region in order to learn about its cultures

  • Our primary goal is to start our students on a path toward communicative competence while exposing them to other cultures.

Quarter 1

During the 1st quarter, we have been learning to use culturally appropriate greetings, farewells, apologies, and expressions of courtesy. We have been working on recognizing examples of cognates and loan words. Ask your students to give you examples of words that are the same or almost the same in both languages, English and Spanish. We refer to cognates as “connections/ conexión”. Also, students have been identifying tangible products related to schools and classrooms in both the students’ and target cultures. We have been practicing to use memorized words and phrases to exchange information on familiar topics, such as likes, dislikes, emotions, and everyday activities.

Quarter 2

We have been learning about families and homes.

First Grade:

Students have been super into our family and home unit! We learned sign language to remember family members. Please, ask your child to teach you some of the family members they learned. The premise is that students are not memorizing word lists, but rather using new vocabulary in a meaningful, real-communication way! We use the language to sing songs about family and home from the target culture. And, we use technology tools and digital literacy skills to present family members/pets in Spanish. The first graders made a booklet about their family members, they presented their work to each other, and they took it home to share with their families.

Culture

  • Recognize examples of cognates and loan words related to family/home.

Second Grade

Students have been using a variety of verbal and non-verbal communication strategies to ask memorized questions and express ideas or thoughts related to family and home with prompting and modeling. We learned songs in Spanish. Please, ask your child to share with you the family song with sign language. We also took the opportunity of the weather being cold, warm, and snowing and we learned to talk about the different weather and seasons.

Third Grade

Students have been using memorized words and phrases to ask and answer simple questions related to family and home (names of family members, people, and pets we have, rooms of the house, furniture, …). We also learned prepositions of place and we practiced using them in complete sentences locating furniture, things, and family members in the house. Our cultural focus is Spain. We looked at the royal family and the royal palace of Spain and we talked about presidents and kings.

Fourth Grade

We used memorized words and phrases about family and homes from different cultures to describe how different people live in the world (Social Studies). We learned about Cuba and Puerto Rico. We watched videos about each island and we compared basic cultural practices of their families and ours. We also learned prepositions of place and we practiced using them in complete sentences locating furniture, things, and family members in the house.

Fifth Grade

We learned how to say some rooms of the house in Spanish and describe where furniture is in different rooms of the house. We looked at pictures of homes and described what we saw. We used the virtual rooms students created with their classroom teacher and we described them in Spanish.

We learned how to say the members of a family in Spanish.

Students wrote a letter to an architect describing their dream house in Spanish.

Please use the following resources to practice what we have been doing in Spanish Class.

There are so many Spanish-speaking countries in the world! Your knowledge of Spanish will be a great asset to you in the future!
