Log Hours
Log your hours by going to our Google Classroom Page- each member has their own page to log under the classroom tab. Do not click "turn in" until the end of the year:
Our Service Chair will be keeping up with your service hours totals.
The goal is for each member to have at least 20 hours by the end of the school year. Eighth Graders need to have at least 20 hours to receive the NJHS emblem on their diploma.
MMS NJHS operates using Service Learning guidelines that are a modified version of the high school guidelines:
Service Learning Guidelines:
The activity cannot be provided to a for-profit organization. Exception – students can receive Service Learning credit for participating in service opportunities at assisted living facilities and convalescent/nursing homes if the service is provided to residents or patients.
Activities for which students are personally compensated or which are required as a form of restitution cannot be counted toward the Service Learning requirement. Compensation includes all forms of payment (money, discounts, items, grades, privileges, honor awards, etc.)
Activities through any organization, such as a faith-based organization or a student club, which are primarily for the members, will not be approved. If the service is part of an outreach program for the community, the hours may be able to be approved.
Students can participate in a fund-raising event for a non-profit organization. They may not, however, receive Service Learning credit for: soliciting for donations, selling concessions or other items, or for running, walking, swimming or biking etc. to raise funds.
Students who support non-profit fundraisers by planning and organizing may receive credit.
Activities can be counted if they involve studying and/or advocating for important community needs, as long as such studying leads to formal recommendations for action and the student remains involved until the recommendations are presented or completed.
Activities that promote political parties, specific agendas affiliated with a political party, or individual candidates, cannot be counted for Service Learning Hours. Any activity that is nonpartisan, such a voter registration, would count for hours.
Hours will be approved for service only. Hours will not be approved for donations, such as contributions of funds or other items.
School activities can meet Service Learning requirements if they benefit or promote the general welfare of the entire school.
Time spent formally organizing and planning a Service Learning activity or participating in training can be counted as long as the hours can be quantified and verified. Such planning must be a part of active, documented involvement.
Students can receive Service Learning Hours anytime outside of the regular school day. This includes: Before and after school, during lunch, or if students have a Free Period built into their schedule (note: Study Hall is not a free period therefore students are not able to complete hours during that time).
