3D Modeling & Animation Reflections

2025-2026
You're probably expecting a generic answer like: "It's my passion!". This isn't the case for me.I wanted to do Computer Science. Unfortunately for me, there were no slots. I still want to make the most out of this opportunity, so I will try and learn some soft-skills at least and basic 3D Modeling. I plan to possibly use my skills for some aerospace engineering (rockets).
I learned how the basics of 3DS Max. I have learned how to combine primatives to make complex objects. I am now proficient in many tools in 3DS Max, such as the array tool, transform tools, and many more. I also think that my general 3d modeling skills have improved. I plan to use other applications such as OpenSCAD for designing an ionic wind propelled plane. I'm grateful for the oppurtunity I have got to learn, and want to use it.
Temple of the Primitives
My skills in 3DS Max have continued to improve. I feel more familiar with the shortcuts, I also am learning new tools like the "Edit Poly" modifier. I also now have the ability to create something based off of a reference image. I'm now better at using modifiers in 3DS Max. I'm happy that my 3D modeling skills have continued to improve as I use different software at home and want my skills to transfer.

I now have the ability to look at an object and make a plan on how to model the object. I can now process what steps and modifiers are required to create the object. I now know how to create a block-out from a reference image. I make sure to think about the steps I will use to create an object based off of a referance image.
Modeling Project (Skeleton Knife)
Four Corners Scene
In this module, I learned how to use cameras and lights. I learned how to manipulate the objects by changing parameters. I can now makes different types of lights and cameras, allowing me to create unique "vibes" for a scene.
I have learned a lot this quarter. I'm much more confident in my ability to model objects using 3DS Max. I can look at an object and plan out how I will model it, I can think about what modifiers I will use, and what parameters to input into the modifiers. Overall, I feel much more confident in my ability to use 3DS Max. and how to think like a 3D artist.
In addition to my increased knowledge in 3DS Max, I have learned skills transferrable to other 3D modeling software. I feel like my models in Blender have improved alongside my work in 3DS Max. Blender and 3DS Max may have different names for modifiers, different menus, and so on, but there is usually a tool that can be used in Blender to accomplish the same thing in 3DS Max and vice versa.
For my modeling project, I modeled a skeleton knife, while the knife was relatively simple I still learned a lot. I learned how to use Booleans. I learned basic material editing as well as animation. I'm very happy with the result of my finished project, I think it looks aesthetically pleasing.
Sometimes I'm unsure on how to execute a function in 3DS Max, using a search engine has been very helpful for this. I'm able to find useful information and new strategies on how to model more effectively and efficiently. For instance, I wanted to implement a rubber-like material for the handle of my skeleton knife, I was able to find a video tutorial and I now a little bit about how to add materials to a model.
In this module not only have my general modeling skills in 3DS Max improved, but I also now know how to use materials in 3DS Max. I learned about compound materials, compound materials are a type of material that uses multiple materials in order to "mix" them together. In addition, I learned how to use the shellac material. The shellac material takes in two inputs and creates a material that randomly puts the pattern together.
I used these newly-learned skills to make several projects. I made a ring known as the one ring, this project used a metal-like material. I also used the shellac material to create a bowling ball object. Finally, I made a diamond and modified the IOR.
Since learning how to use materials in 3DS Max I've wondered how to add textures for more "custom" objects. In module six, I learned a lot about UVW mapping. UVW mapping allows me to tell 3DS Max where it should put textures. This module was quite difficult for me because my file was corrupted, I spent a couple days trying to fix it but failed. In the end. I had to make the Lego Indiana Jones model 3 times, though it looks nice.
