CHCCS Advanced Learning and Leadership

Sam Nguyen has been in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools since 2016, teaching across a variety of grades. As a gifted education specialist, her work includes supporting teachers and families, and creating and developing engaging and inspiring lessons that encourage all students to "stretch their brains". Daily, you will find her teaching K-3 Talent Development lessons and providing working with students in grades 4 and 5. Sam is also an avid runner, globe-trotter, grateful gardener, beekeeper, and mom to two curious kiddos and LOTS of chickens. She is committed to supporting students in stretching their thinking and providing support as they explore their interests and talents.

Services at Carrboro Elementary are guided by our district gifted education plan to provide tiered services to identified students, and provide wide-ranging opportunities for development of emerging talents.

Advanced Learning and Student Leadership service delivery:

  • Can be delivered face to face, or digitally through Google Classroom, and other appropriate digital platforms.

  • Involves the total school community and includes teacher support through co-teaching, digital and real-time meeting collaboration, and through the district's Instructional Planning Team's curriculum work.

  • Is dependent on individual student needs. A few students whose classroom & performance data indicate greater needs, may include meaningful, robust, measurable independent inquiry projects for students working beyond the regular curriculum.

  • Include the school-wide development of Paideia methods for all students, which can be modeled and supported by the GES in all subject areas.

  • Includes arts, writing, performance, and technology-based school-wide enrichment opportunities (creative writing, independent exploration, maker events)
