Welcome to 8th grade Social Studies on Team Legend! The essential standards for eighth grade integrate United States history with the study of North Carolina history. This integrated study helps students understand and appreciate the legacy of our democratic republic and to develop skills needed to engage responsibly and intelligently as North Carolinians. This course serves as a stepping-stone for more intensive study in high school.

Students will also be able to:

  • Interpret multiple historical perspectives is necessary to understanding the past.
  • Understand the credibility of historical sources must be examined in order to ensure accuracy and
  • appropriateness.
  • Use different sources of information (both primary and secondary) from multiple perspectives (e.g.,
  • race/ethnic groups, gender, socioeconomic status, political affiliation, time periods) to understand and
  • interpret a particular event or issue.
  • Identify issues and problems in a particular time and analyze the interests, values, perspectives, and
  • points of view of those involved in the situation in order to establish context.

HOMEWORK

Homework is regularly assigned in social studies and taken up at our discretion. Your homework is relevant and purposeful; therefore, it is important! Most homework is due the next day and should be your best effort. Should getting homework done be difficult for you on a regular basis, please speak with Mrs. Cullop for assistance.

LATE WORK

Assignments will be accepted late with a ten percent penalty for up to one week. Late assignments will not be accepted after one week.

ASSESSMENTS

Students will be assessed on content matter approximately every two to three weeks. Assessments will come in a variety of formats. They may include quizzes, multiple choice and short answer tests, projects, and/or presentations. Assessments will increase in difficulty as the year progresses. Students will be given the opportunity to retest on unit assessments in order to show growth and mastery of standards.

Grading Policy

Students are assessed on mastery of

standards. All assessments are

graded on a 100-point scale, and

grades are calculated using the

total points method.

Grades in 8th grade social studies

reflect the following criteria:

A (90 - 100)

The student demonstrates an advanced, in-depth understanding of the material

B (80 - 89)

The student has mastered the targeted knowledge and skills for this unit

C (70 - 79)

The student understands the foundational material that supports the targeted learning, but is still working to master the material

D (60 - 69)

The student is able to demonstrate an understanding of the foundational material for the unit with help from the teacher, but still struggles when working independently

F (59 and below)

Even with assistance from the teacher, the student shows little to no understanding of the material

Students are expected to keep all handouts and assignments in their Social Studies Notebook. Dividers should be labeled with the units listed below:

Classroom Procedures

PRIOR to Class

Students should:

- Take care of all bathroom needs

- Get all necessary supplies from lockers

- Take out all class materials (paper, pencils, homework)

DURING Class

Students should:

- Sit in their assigned seats

- Talk with appropriate voices

- Respect the property of others

- Refrain from eating and drinking

- Behave in a courteous manner toward other members of the class and guests to the classroom

AFTER Class

Students should:

- Clean up their work area

- Put all trash in the garbage cans

- Push all chairs under the table
