What are Tutorials? Here is some information about the 10 Steps to Tutorial and our twice a week Tutorial groups.
Tutorials are a regular process in AVID. Students are expected to find an area outside of the AVID class in another academic class that they have a question about. It could be a question from a test or quiz that they got wrong, or something from their homework that they do not understand, or something that they want to explore more deeply.
Every Tuesday and Thursday before the beginning of school, students turn in a Tutorial Request Form (or TRF). This includes the specific question that they want to explore in the day's Tutorials.
Seaforth utilizes Peer Tutors for our weekly Tutorial groups. The Peer Tutors organize student TRFs by subject area, create group space for students to write on the board, and lead the Socratic questioning.
Every Tuesday and Thursday, students get into groups based on the subject area of their question. Students take turns presenting the question they found on their TRF, and other members of the group ask questions using the Socratic Method to lead the student presenter to a deeper understanding of their question.
