The AVID Elective Course lasts all year long and is paired with other academic classes.
In 9th Grade, students at Seaforth are enrolled in Earth Science Honors together with their AVID Freshman Elective course. In 10th Grade, students are enrolled in English II Honors together with their AVID Sophomore Elective course (or students also in Dual Language are enrolled in Economics and Personal Finance Honors).
Students in 11th and 12th Grade are enrolled in CCCC Dual Enrollment courses together with their AVID Junior and Senior Elective courses. Most of our students take Psychology, Sociology, and Art History in their dual enrollment classes, but they can also select from a variety of courses that match their individual needs.
What does the AVID Elective class look like?
What do we do in the AVID Elective Class?
Students are expected to keep an organized 3-inch binder with handouts from all classes.
The binders are checked once each week for neatness, organization, and including Cornell-style questions and summaries on their notes and handouts.
Every Tuesday and Thursday, students participate in the Tutorial process to better understand something from class that has been giving them trouble.
Students complete practice work to prepare for the SAT and ACT in their Junior Elective course. They identify areas of weakness and work on improvement using a variety of test-taking strategies.
Inquiry is one core pillar of WICOR. Students challenge each other's ideas about texts using the Socratic method in order to think more deeply about a variety of topics.
Students are challenged to take sides and debate each other's ideas on current events, and other topics. They select representatives, research background information, and question each other to better understand how to create arguments.
