PAY IT FORWARD: No student will ever be denied lunch if they need it, whether they can pay for it or not. At the end of each school year, the school is responsible for paying any outstanding lunch balances. This year all money we earn from our Dining for Dollars events will benefit our Pay It Forward initiative.
$20 pays for a child's lunch for a week. $80 pays for a child's lunch for an average month. If you want to donate directly to the Pay It Forward account, you can do so in either of the following ways:
- Pay for lunches for a child in need whom you know.
- Write a check to the Moncure PTA and write "Pay It Forward" in the memo line (or send cash if you'd prefer to the front office).
- Prefer Venmo? Email Sheri Edwards (sheri.edwards0513@gmail.com), PTA Secretary, and she will tell you how to Venmo the money.
No amount is too small, and you may contribute as many times as you want throughout the year. Thank you!East Chatham Baseball and Softball Registration is under way. Baseball Registration Closes February 1st, but our inaugural first year of softball registration will stay open until February 15th. Directors are excited to get underway with their seasons and especially excited to get Softball going on this side of our county. Bus Behavior
I will be speaking to all bus riders next week regarding bus behavior. Our drivers depend upon appropriate behavior to ensure bus safety. If your child is unable to follow the rules of the bus, they will be taken off the bus. This is a safety concern and also a staffing concern. If we want to keep our FANTASTIC bus drivers, they must feel safe and supported while driving Moncure's kiddos.
Text Messaging
We are continuing to work on ensuring that all parents and guardians that want text messaging from the school receive it. These messages come once a week on Friday and will be used for school emergencies. An email was sent earlier this week to gather text information. We hope to have all information updated by Friday, October 13.
Academic Plans
Moncure School posts all teacher academic plans on a weekly basis onto the Moncure, At Home website under the "Academic Plan" tab (click more on the top right corner when using a laptop). The direct document that houses these plans is here. Teachers update plans on Mondays.

NC Check-Ins and NC Check-Ins 2.0 Information and Scheduling
The NC Check-Ins and NC Check-Ins 2.0 are formative interims developed by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s Annual Testing Program and are aligned to North Carolina grade-level content standards.
The main purpose of the interims is to provide students, teachers, and parents or guardians with immediate in-depth data and a reliable estimate of students’ current performance on selected subsets of content standards. The end-of-grade (EOG) and end-of-course (EOC) tests share a common question bank with the NC Check-Ins and NC Check-Ins 2.0, which then exposes students to similar question types and rigor found on the EOGs and EOCs.
The interim administration dates are as follows:
NC Check-in #1: November 2, 2022 and November 3, 2022
NC Check-in #2: January 10, 2023 and January 11, 2023
NC Check-in #3: March 28, 2023 and March 29, 2023

This is a reminder that on Monday, March 7, Chatham County Schools will transition to optional masking in our buildings and on our buses. Anyone who wants to continue to wear a mask is welcome to. Those who wish to no longer wear a mask can remove them.
We no longer require social distancing.
Presently, anyone who tests positive for COVID should not return to school for five days, and then he or she will be asked to mask for five days. We expect updated guidance on this soon and will keep you informed about any changes.
Lunch procedures will also return to pre-COVID norms on Monday, March 7. It will no longer be required that students are masked or socially distanced in the cafeteria. All students, those with and without masks, will be allowed to socialize during lunch. We will continue to offer a lunch environment that is socially distanced that will require students to remain quiet while masks are off while eating. If you would prefer that your child eat in this environment, please let me know. (jsudol@chatham.k12.nc.us)
We are grateful for your patience as we work through this transition. Please reach out if you have questions or concerns. We want to make sure all of our families know what to expect this coming week.

October 8 Moncure Update:
Moncure Family,
Next week, Moncure School will hold its first emergency lockdown drill of the 21/22 school year. This drill is designed to prepare all staff and students in the event of a intruder on campus. Most of our students have taken part in this drill at Moncure in previous years. Although students are prepared for this drill, it can be a dramatic experience. I ask that you discuss with your child the importance of following our staff's instructions during the drill. Teachers have been trained on emergency protocols and understand the deep importance of conducting emergency drills with fidelity. The sheriff's department will be represented during this drill to help us assess our procedures and provide assistance. We will hold additional emergency lockdown drills throughout this school year. Next week's drill will be the only one that will be announced prior, all others will be held without notice to ensure all involved are always prepared. I thank you in advance for discussing this with your child and, as always, please email me at jsudol@chatham.k12.nc.us if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you,
J Sudol

From the PTA:
Attention 8th grade Parents:
Please save the date, Thursday May 26th for the 8th grade graduation and social. We apologize for this being on a week night but the Bradford is a popular wedding venue and Covid has effected weddings and scheduling. We chose to wait for EOGs to be over to ensure a later week night would not effect their school work/testing.
The promotion ceremony will be from 6:00-7:00 at the Bradford with photo opportunities from 7:00-7:30 in front of the Bradford or in the courtyard. Then the social will take place from 7:30-9:30. The social will be semi formal attire. Details and food sign up genius will follow closer to time.
If you have any questions feel free to email Kendra McLean at flossi10@gmail.com
Or Alisha Abernathy at Alisha.Abernathy@yahoo.com

We are working to make this program as meaningful as possible, and I commend our teachers for what they've been able to accomplish through 3.5 weeks. Our hope is that a successful pilot will help open opportunities for our students to take part in classes and programs offered throughout the county, including advanced math and club options. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions regarding the pilot.
2020 EOG Reading Results: On Monday we plan to provide 4th through 8th graders their 2020 EOG Reading results. These results were delayed due to the renorming of this assessment. We plan to provide students their scores in a sealed envelope. If you would prefer to pick up your child's score, please let me know by Monday morning.

Fundraising for Moncure:
The Moncure PTA pays for many of our students’ favorite programs -athletics, science fun for everyone, band, technology, awards, class supplies and special events. The PTA raises money for these programs through volunteers working at the PTA Thrift store. Each year, volunteer hours at the store earn us $20,000 to $30,000! We would not be able to raise this much with other types of school fundraisers. If just one member of every family would volunteer one night at the store we will meet our fundraising goal.
Where & What is a Work Night -
The PTA thrift store is located next to the new True Value Hardware in Pittsboro - 400 East St. Moncure’s work night is every Tuesday from 5:30 to 7:30. Volunteers, “elf” the store by straightening shelves and racks, doing light cleaning and restocking items. You work at your own pace, talk to friends, meet new friends, hang out with your child’s teacher AND can shop while you work - Volunteers receive 50% off clothing, books & toys!
Please join us next Tuesday night!
Upcoming Events - Work Night Dinner Tuesday, October 5th
Raise money for our school by helping at the thrift store then enjoy dinner & drinks after at Michoacán Mexican Grill. Bring all your friends and meet new ones! Please email Katy Gasiorowski at kcg185@bellsouth.net if you plan to attend. Look forward to seeing you there!

September 7:
Good Morning,
This year, Moncure School will continue to make sure students that are absent have the opportunity to access academics online. Zoom meetings will no longer take place if a student is absent, but lesson topics, procedures and materials are available. From the Moncure, At-Home site, click the "Student Schedules" link on the top right of the page.
From the "Student Schedules" page, please choose your child's teacher or grade level. Teachers have provided their plans for daily instruction and as many resources as possible to allow for learning from home. Students accessing work through Google Classroom already know their log-in information.
Please stay in contact with your child's core teachers (ELA, Math, Social Studies and Science) if they are expected to miss significant time and please check the student schedule daily.
Thank you all,
J Sudol

August 22:
Good Morning Moncure Family,
First, I want to thank the Moncure staff for their tireless work in helping to prepare for a great opening week. If you stopped by school last week, I'm sure you witnessed the schoolwide effort to make sure we are ready for your child. I also want to thank you, the Moncure community, for trusting us for the safety and academic growth of Moncure's kids. This is a responsibility we do not take lightly.
Although this school year is once again starting with some uncertainties, Moncure School is dedicated to providing in-person learning all school year for every child. Your help ensuring that students wear a mask while at school will help us keep students learning, socializing and playing at school.
If your child rides the bus, you should have received information via email or phone concerning pick up/drop off times. If you have not received this information, please email me at jsudol@chatham.k12.nc.us and you'll receive an update as soon as possible. Thank you to Tammy, Mrs. Leonti, Mrs. Spinks, Mrs. Phillips and Mr. Emerson for helping to ensure buses run smoothly from day one.
Moncure School is ready to begin what will be a great year. Please contact me if you have questions or concerns that you don't feel that we have addressed, and I'll get back you.
Thanks again,
J Sudol

August 2:
It's hard to believe, but school will be starting in just 3 weeks! I hope your summer has been a good one, but I'm certainly ready to start the school year. Although there are questions remaining on how we may run open house this year, I want to provide an update on our current plan.
For families that prefer a virtual option OR if it is decided in-person open house is not permitted:
Homeroom teachers will hold an online open house option on the afternoon of Monday, August 16. These meetings will be 15 minutes each with your child's assigned teacher. Teachers will be in contact next week with the start time of their Zoom and the link to the meeting.
For families that prefer to meet in-person AND in-person meetings are permitted:
Families will be able to schedule a time during the week of August 16 to meet with your child's homeroom teacher. Teachers will hold 15 minute meeting with families following recommended COVID protocols. Again, this option will only be available IF we are permitted to hold in-person open house. Next week, teachers will be providing a sign up schedule for these meetings.
July 7:
Hello Moncure Family!
I hope you all are enjoying the summer! Just a few reminders below. Information on open house will be provided as soon as we receive information on the format we can use. Our Kindergarten enrollment is low...please share the registration information below in any way possible. We are also on the lookout for a 4th and 5th grade math teacher and an EC teacher to join our team next year. Please let anyone know that may be interested and have them email jsudol@chatham.k12.nc.us. PTA thrift shop info is below. Remember, half of all hours this summer will directly fund new athletic uniforms and playground updates.
Thank you in advance for all your help!

Reach 20 Summer Reading Challenge
Among the summer learning opportunities in Chatham County Schools is the Reach 20 Summer Reading Challenge. We’re encouraging students in kindergarten through eighth grade to read at least 20 hours this summer. According to research, students reading at least 20 minutes per day during the summer have more success retaining what they learned during the previous school year. Students who meet the Reach 20 challenge could earn prizes including books, water bottles and the chance to win an iPad.
More information about Reach 20 is on our website at www.chatham.k12.nc.us. Look for the image that says SummersCool.

Bus Routes
We are continuing to experience bus driver shortages. We currently have one driver that is able to drive our 4 bus routes for the next 2 weeks. Mrs. Johnson, from our front office, will be making phone calls TODAY (1/23) to determine how many students will be able to get rides from parents until our staffing situation improves. We will continue to offer bus transportation to all students that cannot get a ride to school, but I strongly recommend students receive rides to and from school in order to keep student school schedules from drastically changing. I understand that this situation is frustrating and is causing inconveniences. We are expecting a new driver in February and expect all buses to be running normal schedules by the end of February. I appreciate your patience. Once we have plan set for buses, I will send another message. Please expect this on Sunday afternoon.

Late Bus Routes
Moncure is currently experiencing a shortage of school employees that are able to drive our buses. Because of this, Bus 76 and Bus 87 will require late routes starting on Monday, January 4. This means that riders of these 2 buses will be picked up and dropped off approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour later than than usual. Our 2 drivers will drive their assigned route, then drive the route 76 (Mrs. Neal's Bus) and 87 (Mrs. Allen's Bus).
If at all possible, I strongly encourage riders of these buses to be dropped off and picked up at school by a parent. This will help ensure that students' routines will not change. If your child rides 76 or 87 and you are unable to drop off them off and pick them up at school, please email me at jsudol@chatham.k12.nc.us. We will still run these routes for all students that are unable to get rides, but pick up and drop off times will be delayed by 45 minutes to 1 hour.
I am currently trying to find news and substitute driver to help with this issue. I will do all I can to make this change temporary. I do very much apologize for this change and its inconvenience. Please do not hesitate to email me with questions.

COVID Testing and Flu Shots
The Chatham County Public Health Department has worked with its partners to establish testing sites on two of our school system's campuses. If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, or are a close contact with someone who tested positive, testing is available for you at:
Chatham Central High School on Mondays from 12:30-4:30 p.m.
Northwood High School on Thursdays from 12:30-4:30 p.m.
For more information on the testing sites, visit chathamnc.org/coronavirustesting.
Additionally, please get a flu shot if you haven’t already gotten one. It’s another important way to help one another stay healthy. For more on the flu, visit chathamnc.org/flu. And please continue to regularly practice the 3 Ws to help curb the spread of COVID-19 – that’s washing your hands for at least 20 seconds, waiting six feet apart and wearing a face covering when you’re in public or when you’re around others not in your household.
As a reminder, a wide variety of information related to COVID-19 and our school system is in the Chatham County Schools Reopening Guidebook.

October 2:
The Chatham County School Board voted to begin in-person instruction for K-2 students. In-person instruction will begin on October 19. Moncure's K-2 students will come to school 2 days a week while also continuing to learn remotely 2 days a week. Students that were signed up for CCS Virtual Academy will remain in remote learning 4 days a week (all week).
K-2 Students are being grouped into 3 groups: A group, B group., and VA (Virtual Academy) group.
Students in the A group will come to school on Mondays and Tuesdays, and students in the B group will come to school on Thursday and Friday.
Students in A Group will learn remotely on Thursday and Friday, and students in the B group will learn remotely on Monday and Tuesday.
Students in the VA (Virtual Academy) Group will learn remotely on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Parents signed up for the VA Group at the beginning of the school year. Questions regarding VA are to be directed to Mitch Stensland: mstensland@chatham.k12.nc.us
Wednesdays are being used for teacher planning.
On Wednesday, K-2 teachers will communicate which students are in A group and B group. Specifics on Moncure's plan for Virtual Academy will also be shared. The following factors were considered when forming A group and B group.
Student and Staff Safety Most importantly, ensuring that the 6 foot social distancing protocol is followed and that there is enough staff to monitor the health-screening protocols and the 6 foot, mask-wearing and hand-washing protocols. Our school and bus disinfecting plans were also a large factor in our decision-making process.
Optimizing Use of Instructional Time It is Moncure School's goal to continue providing K-2 students as much "Live" teacher instruction as possible. It is our goal to ensure that students still have the opportunity to receive "Live" instruction from our teachers 4 days a week through a combination of in-school and remote instruction.
Consistency We will make every attempt to NOT change the teachers of our K-2 student population. We understand the importance of consistency in the lives of our students at this time. Every effort will be made to keep students assigned to their current teacher. Mr. Sudol will contact the parents of students that will have a different teacher when students return. It is also our goal to keep in-person and remote student schedules as closely aligned to our current practices as possible.
Siblings We understand that having siblings on the same A or B group schedules is a great need for families. Every effort will be made to make this happen. In some cases, changing a child's assigned teacher may be the only way to ensure this. Mr. Sudol will contact families and provide options when this is the case.
On Wednesday, Mr. Sudol will be sharing the safety protocols that Moncure School will take when students return. Please check this page on Wednesday evening for this information. Parents and students will be given the opportunity to ask questions on a Google Form after these protocols and information regarding the A, B, and VA groups are shared.. We are looking forward to seeing our K-2 here at school and teachers and staff are working extremely hard to make this a successful transition.
Please click here to sign up to work at the PTA Thrift Shop....remember, your hours help support your children through the purchasing of technology, learning resources, athletics, field trips and more!!
