Concert Band Classes

All concert band classes meet 5 days a week for 45 minutes as an elective course. It is a year long commitment. Students must start band in 6th grade.
Beginning band is open to 6th graders only. Students do not need any experience to participate. Classes are split into brass and woodwinds. These students will participate in two concerts a year and are eligible to participate in the pep band. For more information about how to sign up, visit the prospective members page.
Intermediate band is open to 7th grade band students who have participated in one year of 6th grade band. Students must have participated in 6th grade band to enroll in 7th grade band. These students perform two major concerts a year, and also perform at the Pittsboro Tree Lighting Ceremony. 7th grade students are eligible to audition for jazz band, all honor bands, and they may participate in jazz lab during Discovery time.
Advanced band is open to 8th graders who have participated in two years of band classes. These students perform at Winter and Spring concerts, and also travel to perform at Music Performance Adjudication. 8th grade band students also participate in a Spring trip. Past locations have included Carowinds, Gatlinburg, and Disney World. 8th grade students are eligible to audition for jazz band, all honor bands, and they may participate in jazz lab during Discovery time.

Jazz Band

The Pollard jazz band is a group open to 7th and 8th grade students by audition. Auditions take place at the end of the previous year, and rehearsals occur Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7:15am, and on Fridays during club time. Students must be enrolled in a band class to be eligible to audition. The jazz band is made up of an elite group of students who may be asked to play at smaller events throughout the year. They also host an annual community swing dance at The Plant. Students in jazz band frequently audition for the all-region and all-state jazz bands.
Jazz students MUST be at Friday club time rehearsal. The only exception will be made for AcaPollard group members. Jazz band students are also expected to participate in Jazz Lab during Discovery time Mon-Thurs unless they are required to be in another Discovery.

Pep Band

The pep band is open to all band students 6th-8th and typically has about 90 participating members. They are responsible for supporting our Pollard basketball team at home games. We have one after school rehearsal just before the start of basketball season. There is no audition for pep band.

In the event games are rescheduled, the pep band will attend at the directors’ discretion.

Honor Bands

Many 7th and 8th grade band students at Pollard opt to audition for the numerous honor band opportunities offered around the state. These opportunities are optional and can be highly competitive. Most consist of a live audition. Students who place with top scores at auditions are invited to participate in a 2 or 3 day clinic.
