I am so excited to return as the AIG Specialist at Chatham Grove Elementary for my 5th year! This will be my 21st year as an elementary school teacher.
Education/Degrees: I have a Masters in Teaching K-6 with Specialization in AIG and certification in 6-8th grade mathematics and 6th-8th Grade science. Originally from Baltimore, MD, I first came to NC in 1994 graduating from Davidson College with a degree in psychology. I spent a decade in Pittsburgh, PA, first in technology, and then switched my career to education after earning my Masters. I have been a classroom teacher, a reading specialist, a math specialist, gifted education teacher, and a high school basketball and lacrosse. This will be my 16th year in Chapel Hill, NC.
North Carolina Association for the Gifted and Talented (NCAGT):
I am very passionate about Gifted Education and serve on the Board of Directors of NCAGT with the hopes of improving support for gifted students in NC. I am a host of the podcast, "They'll Be Fine," which seeks to educate others that AIG kids will not "be fine" unless they have access to additional support and resources. You can listen to it free, wherever you listen to podcasts! :)
Why I Teach: I love teaching AIG students, especially Twice-Exceptional friends as I too am 2E! Being ADHD is my super power, and I love when children see it has theirs too! Because of my personal experience and as a parent of three 2E children, I focus on supporting students, teachers, and parents who work with Neurodiverse learners.
Outside of school: I like when my brain and body are constantly challenged, and do not like sitting still. So, I go for long bike rides, lift heavy weights, and am always reading a nonfiction book and working on a new skill. My family keeps my life in constant motion - a little chaotic, but mainly adventurous and exciting - just the way I like it!! My husband, Trevor, is the Chief of Head and Neck at UNC and together we have 3 children (10th, 12th, and 2nd year at UNC Honors at Chapel Hill!), 2 dogs, and 2 cats.
One of my greatest joys and accomplishments is raising my three children. My UNC child is pre-law and traveled in her freshman year to Ecuador for spring break to learn about sustainable architecture and to Thailand this summer to learn about restorative farms and food systems. My son is student body president of his high school this year! This summer he attended NC Governor's School for mathematics and he also hiked the Inca Trail with friends! My youngest plays lacrosse and earned a spot on the American Select Team for NC this summer, meeting the #1 player in the country (Go Tarheels!). She loves math and is looking forward to her BC Calc class (I wish more kids loved math like this!) along with competing on her school's Robotics team again.
I firmly believe in the power of being curious, living your passions, and learning something new every day. This mentality heavily influences my work as an AIG teacher. This summer, I was fortunate to return to a country I fell in love with as a teenager and has influenced so any aspects of my life, Japan. I came home inspired to learn to cook some Japanese dishes like Ichigo Daifuku Mochi, Tempura, stuffed Bao Buns, Soufflé pancakes, Gunkan, Chicken Katsu, Onigiri, and Oyakodon! Learning new things fills my bucket!

Hi Gator Families!
I am so happy to be a member of the AIG team at CGE! We have an amazing community of families and school staff, and our students are second to none!
Experience in Education: I have a Masters In Education degree from William and Mary, with a specialization in Curriculum and Instruction. I earned my undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech and am a loyal Hokie fan! This is my 15th year working for Chatham County Schools. In addition to teaching gifted students, I have been a Curriculum Coach, a Math Teacher and a Language Arts Teacher, as well as an Instructional Program Facilitator in our county’s Exceptional Children department.
Why I Teach: When I was in graduate school, one of my professors gave us a poem that emphasized the impact a teacher’s words and actions can have on a child’s day at school. I’ve long since lost the actual poem, but the message behind it guides me every time I walk into the school building. I know that my students will learn and grow best when they can trust that I see and appreciate their efforts to be successful. This drives me to give my very best to my students as I guide them to experience and try new things. I am truly honored and humbled to be an instrumental part of their lives and I absolutely delight in witnessing their endeavors and accomplishments.
Outside of School: My life outside of school centers around my family life with my husband, our three children and our awesome dog Mochi! My husband helps develop driverless car technology with an emphasis on public safety. Our oldest daughter is in graduate school at UNC Chapel Hill studying information science. She is focusing on delivering effective technology to people with disabilities. Our son is finishing up an undergraduate degree from ECU in health information systems. He enjoys many creative pursuits, especially writing, composing and playing music. Our youngest daughter is a senior in high school, hoping to study exercise science in college. She is a competitive cyclist and last year even represented Team USA at a World Cup in Ireland!
We all love to be outside, especially hiking which we do as often as we can! My absolute favorite place to be is in the mountains, drinking morning coffee on a deck looking out at the view. I am also passionate about yoga and try to practice it daily. Between our daughter’s cycling competitions and family living overseas, we also travel quite a bit! We have developed quite a flair for packing efficiently and entertaining ourselves on long road trips. We are always up for an adventure, no matter the distance and logistics required to get there!
