What Is the School Health Advisory Council?
SHAC is intended to help plan, update, implement, promote, and monitor the Local Wellness Policy, as well as to address other health and nutrition issues within the school system. The committee serves as a venue to focus on student health issues and works to promote student and employee health and wellness in compliance with state and federal requirements.
SHAC is authorized to examine related research and laws, assess student needs and the current school environment, review existing board policies and administrative regulations, collaborate with appropriate community agencies and organizations, and help raise awareness about student health issues. The council also may make policy recommendations to the board related to this policy and other policies concerning student wellness.
Who Is SHAC?
The council will be composed of representatives from the school system, the local health department, and the community. The council must include members of each of the following groups: the school board, school system administrators, school system food service representatives, physical education teachers, school health professionals, students, parents or guardians, and the public.

Reporting
SHAC may assist in the development of a plan for measuring and assessing implementation of this policy and in developing methods to inform and update the public about the content and implementation of the Local Wellness Policy. In addition, it is also responsible to provide periodic reports to the board and public regarding the status of its work. In addition, the council shall assist the lead wellness official in creating an annual report that includes the minutes of physical activity and the minutes of physical education and/or healthful living education received by students in the system each school year, as well as any other information required by the State Board of Education or NCDPI.
Guest Presenters
Guest presenters are welcome to share information with the School Health Advisory Council. All presentations must be submitted to the SHAC Coordinator, Rob Schooley (rschooley@chatham.k12.nc.us), two weeks prior to the date of the proposed presentation. Topics for guest presentations should align with the SHAC’s goals and current health priorities. Potential topics may include but are not limited to mental health, physical education, nutrition, substance abuse prevention, and community health resources. Guest presenters can include health professionals, community leaders, educators, researchers, and representatives from relevant organizations. The SHAC members can propose potential presenters. Final selection will be made by the SHAC Coordinator in consultation with the CCS administration.
To propose a presentation, please contact the SHAC Coordinator (Rob Schooley - rschooley@chatham.k12.nc.us). This initial communication should include the presenter’s name, affiliation, contact information, and a brief description of the presentation topic. The SHAC Coordinator will review and approve the request, ensuring it aligns with the council’s objectives. Presentations should be informative, relevant, and tailored to the needs of the SHAC. Presenters should provide any necessary materials (e.g., handouts, slides) to the SHAC Coordinator at least two weeks prior to the meeting. Presenters are expected to maintain professionalism and respect the council’s time and members. Presentations should adhere to the allocated time unless otherwise specified by the coordinator. Following the presentation, a question-and-answer session will be facilitated by the coordinator. Council members are encouraged to engage with the presenter and seek clarifications or additional information.
