Individual Counseling
The primary role of the Student Assistance Counselors is to support students through life's ups and downs, whatever the reason may be. Confidentiality is of the utmost importance with the exception of harm to self, harm to others, or someone is harming them. Topics specific to Student Assistance can include but are not limited to:
Alcohol and other drug problems
Family crisis- divorce, separation, illness, or death
Poor self image, self esteem
Suicidal thoughts
Trouble with friends or family members
Feeling sad, lonely, or anxious
Relationships
Eating disorders
LGBTQ+ support
Students can refer themselves or a friend or family member can refer a student. Faculty members can also refer students. All referrals are kept confidential.
Group Counseling
Group Counseling is an integral part of the Student Assistance Program. Groups run on an as-needed basis and vary in topic. Confidentiality is very important. Topics can include:
Stress Management
Divorce
Grief and Loss
Children of Alcoholics
Peer Support
Social Skills
Teen Discussion
Transition Years (6th grade, 9th grade)
Programs
Parent Wellness Series - In collaboration with Berkeley Heights, Millburn, New Providence, and Summit school districts, we offer informative parent/guardian programs throughout the year.
Gender Sexuality Alliance Club at CHS - This club is dedicated to promoting a safer school environment in which all students (LGBTQ+ and otherwise) are accepted and respected. The focus of the group is to provide a safe haven for LGBTQ+ and allies to come together and discuss acceptance and provide mutual support to one another. Mrs. Sleight is the advisor. Acceptance Alliance Club at CMS - This club supports and celebrates everyone’s race, ethnicity, gender expression, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic background, age, religion, body shape, size, and ability, and helps to make CMS a SafeZone. Ms. Marshall is the advisor. Please reach out with any questions!
Municipal Alliance Committee of the Chathams - Community substance abuse prevention committee funded by the Governor's Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse (GCADA).
Madison Chatham Coalition - Community coalition to prevent and reduce youth substance use through education, collaboration and community-wide change.
