Engaging Activities
Students participate in a live online English class three Saturdays each month, where they learn alongside a teacher from California State University—San Marcos and collaborate with students from other participating high schools.
A Foreign English Teacher (FET) assists students with the vocabulary preview at the start of the session. During the online discussion with the CSUSM professor, the FET facilitates the Google Breakout Room sessions and provides technical support as needed. In the final hour, the FET reviews the lesson, explains the homework, and offers guidance on how to complete it.
Students engage with fun and interactive online tools to enhance their learning experience. Using Poll Everywhere, they generate synonyms for words introduced by the CSUSM professor. They participate in Kahoot! games to review vocabulary introduced by the FET at the start of the session. Additionally, they complete assigned activities using Jamboard and Google Docs, fostering collaboration and active engagement.
The online class begins with a breakout room session where students share their homework responses and collaborate in groups to complete an activity on a specific topic. These sessions provide opportunities for students to engage with peers from other schools, fostering the development of their speaking, writing, and critical thinking skills.
