Socio-Emotional Learning

Socio Emotional-Learning

  • Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is a broad term referring to how students regulate their emotions, communicate with others, use compassion and empathy to understand the needs of other people, build relationships and make good decisions. At Buford, in an effort to support these important domains, we use a comprehensive program entitled reThinkEd. Feel free to learn more about reThinkEd here.

Teacher of the Week Recognition

Each week that Buford is in session, there is an opportunity to nominate teachers for Teacher of the Week.

Students, parents, and staff members can all nominate someone by filling out this form. The name of the Teacher of the Week will be drawn at random from the names submitted. Names that are not drawn will remain in the pool and may be drawn in coming weeks. Each week, the Teacher of the Week will be announced during the Buford staff meeting. Recipients will get a certificate and a miniature trophy.

Thank you for participating! Teachers are working very hard to make this school year a success. It's nice to be able to recognize their individual efforts.-Ms. Anne Kinsley, Algebra Teacher and Facilitator of Teacher of the Week

Engagement Support Assistants

Hello Trojan Family,

We would like to introduce you to our new Engagement Support Assistants who have joined our Buford Middle School Team. The purpose of the Engagement Support Assistants is to support our students in their learning environment. Together the E.S.A. Team provides students with engagement tools, study tips and suggestions, goal setting strategies, and paths to self-advocate for stronger relationships. The Engagement Support Assistants will serve as a bridge between students and academic independence.

A Little Bit about our Student Engagement Team:

Ms. Waller, 7th Grade Engagement Support Assistant

Ms. Waller (Ms.Ray) is a recent graduate of Virginia State University where she studied Criminal Justice and Political Science. As a former Charlottesville High School graduate, AVID Student, and Charlottesville City of Promise alumni member, Ms.Waller is equipped with the knowledge and skills to assist our students in a transformative experience transitioning from Walker to Buford. Previously Ms.Waller has been seen throughout the CCS family as an Instructional Assistant and One-on-One Behavioral Assistant at Venable, as well as a school wide short term and long term substitute.

Ms. Ashby, 8th Grade Engagement Support Assistant

Ms. Ashby is excited to make connections with 8th graders. She will work with students to become active in their learning, participate in classes, and learn self-advocacy skills. Ms. Ashby also works at the high school so she will be a friendly connection and go to resources as your student transitions to high school.
