External Study Abroad programs are semester or year-long academic studies away from Charlotte Latin School during the school year that provide students with an opportunity to experience learning outside the traditional four walls of a CLS classroom. These programs offer the chance to dig deeper into specific interests, cultivate leadership skills, become more independent, and meet students from all over the world.
External Study programs are often transformative experiences, but at the same time are not for everyone and as such require thoughtful planning in advance. Please see our Information and Application Process document to learn more.
School Year Abroad (SYA) is a nonprofit organization focused on providing immersive study abroad programs to high school students. With over 8,500 alumni since 1964, SYA is a school fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). Founded upon a yearlong study abroad model, SYA now operates three campuses in France, Italy and Spain, and has expanded to provide full academic year, semester and summer programs designed to develop skills for an increasingly interdependent world. SYA's yearlong program remains the only secondary-level option allowing students to live with a host family for an entire academic year while earning U.S. graduation credits and preparing for admission to selective U.S. colleges and universities.
We have exciting news! Charlotte Latin School is a now a Member School of SYA. As a benefit, CLS students receive preferred admission to SYA’s first-rate, global academic programs and are given priority for need-based financial aid. Member Schools also benefit from professional development opportunities for their faculty and staff.
