I'm Angel Fang. This is my second year in the U.S.A. I just came from Shanghai, China a year ago. I don't have any siblings. I usually like studying in quiet environment, which can make me concentrate the most. At first, I didn't want to take Engineering because I was not really interested in it. However, after I talked to Ms. Morrow, I found out that Engineering was the best fit for me. Surprisingly, I'm very interested in it. I was also motivated by Ms. Morrow's passion. She was so welcome when I talked to her. So I switched to this class. I'm really excited about laser cutting we are going to learn. It's the technique I never seen it outside the school. I'm glad that we can actually use it by ourselves at school. I can learn a lot about advanced technology skills. I like to bake during my free time. When I am baking sweats, I can have time to make my brain have a little time to rest.
I have designed a robot before, which was for a competition. The competition was to see which robot could finish climbing through a string. Our school gave me the materials such as the engine, the arms, and other parts of the robots. At first, I thought it was super easy because I just needed to follow the instructions and completed the robot. And then I tested it. It didn’t work as well as I had expected. It should use its arms to climb through the whole string. But it actually fell onto the ground and didn’t even finish half of the distance. I wondered why this happened. I found that I needed to add length onto the arms to lower its center of gravity. So I added another wood stick onto the arms and tested again. This time it actually worked but not very well. It still fell to the ground but finished two thirds of the distance. This time I found out the hooks attached to the end of the stick which were used to help the robot hang on the string went wrong. One hook kept conflicting with the other one. So I adjusted the angle of the hooks and made sure that it wouldn’t intersect with the other one. I tested it again. This time, it went very well. The robot finished the whole string! Although my robot went very well in the competition, others’ robots are quicker than mine, so unfortunately I didn’t get a prize. However, I learned a lot from building the robot.
