I am the gifted and talented teacher at Sullivan's Island Elementary School. I have been a teacher here for eight years. Before that, I taught ESL in China for 10 years. This will be my sixth year teaching in Summer SAIL, third year doing checkmate. I love puzzles and games that make me think like chess, go, Rubik's cubes, wordle, nerdle, and trivia.

I am originally from Upstate NY and received my Masters in the Arts of Teaching from Coastal Carolina University in 2004.  I have been teaching social studies in Charleston County for 21 year.  Prior to COVID, I had worked with Summer SAIL for 13 years teaching the visual arts through a historical lens.  Last summer, I was blessed with rejoining the summer SAIL team and look forward to facilitating students exploring coding and robotics, while enrichening their problem-solving, collaboration, creativity, and perseverance skills.

Course Description: Are you smarter than a robot? IF you take this course, THEN you will find out! Get with the program and learn how you can start developing computer programming skills now and keep learning long after camp is over. Explore the basics of computer programming and coding language/commands through interactive activities and online training. We will also work with Sphero, Ozobots, and Dash robots to tackle challenges and obstacles. 

I’m Jenny Fluharty, and I’m currently the SAIL teacher at Johns Island Elementary. I have worked with gifted learners throughout my teaching career, including the past eight years in CCSD’s SAIL program. I have a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and a Masters in Teaching from the University of Virginia, along with endorsements in Gifted & Talented Education and Earth and Space Science. I'm excited to explore Mysteries of the Deep Blue in Summer SAIL!

Course Description: Ocean travelers get your passports ready. Set sail on a tsunami ride around the world. From one ocean to another, we will uncover the mysteries hidden beneath the surface. Embarking upon each destination, we will descend to the marvelous, mystical mysteries of each of the seas. What gives the oceans their color? What are the colors of the Great Barrier Reef? Why are the animals in the Antarctic so large?

I am married for 39 years. I have 4 children and 3 grandchildren with another boy due in July and a girl due in August I have been teaching 4th grade at Orange Grove for 23 years. I love teaching and having fun with kids. I have been working in Summer SAIL for 5 years. Each year, I try to make it better than the year before.

Course Description: Calling all engineers! Think you have what it takes to be the better builder? Test out your instinctive architectural skills through creative structure and bridge building challenges. Then, refine them as we apply engineering design principles, research, and shared inquiry to "build it better" the second time around.

I have been teaching for 15 years in CCSD.  Three of those years have been in the GT Department. I get joy out of allowing students to express their out-of-the-box creativity and deep intellectual curiosity. In my free time, I love spending time with my family, fishing, watching true crime, and cuddling with my puppy Bentley.

Course Description: We seriously doubt you will stay at rest while making rockets and experimenting to accelerate the fun of learning! Come join us as we challenge Sir Isaac Newton’s laws of motion and even design and test rockets and a satellite. Let’s catapult into some engineering fun!

I just completed my first year as a 7th grade ELA teacher at Camp Road Middle School! I love spending time outside, reading, and doing anything creative (especially watercolor painting). I am super excited to eat all the ice cream this summer and spend time on the beach! I am thrilled to have the opportunity to teach a Cultural Arts Connections class and to grow as an educator this summer.

I'm Katherine Reeves, and I've been teaching for six years. This is my second year teaching Fashionable Flair and I am so excited to be back for another terrific summer! Over the years, I’ve taught both math and science, but I’ve always had a true passion for fashion and design! I’m excited for what’s ahead and can’t wait to enjoy an amazing summer!!

Hi, I’m Rebecca Luckie, a SAIL teacher at Stiles Point Elementary with 29 years of teaching experience, including 20 years in SAIL. A lifelong Charleston resident, I’m proud to teach at the same elementary school I attended as a child. I’ve been married to my husband for 30 years, and together we have four amazing children, four fur babies, and a bearded dragon. This is my first year teaching Summer SAIL, and I’m excited to learn and grow alongside your children this summer!

Jae Schmitz: I am the 4th and 5th grade Math and Science teacher at Frierson Montessori on Wadmalaw Island and have been teaching for the past seven years. In addition to teaching, I work as a naturalist at the Kiawah Island Nature Center, where I care for animals and lead nature tours. I am excited to work with students during the Pet Vet Expedition this summer!

Course Description: Your assistance is requested. You are being recruited for the newest division of the CIA…The SAIL Secret Agent Academy or the SSAA. As new secret agents, you will learn all you can about ciphers, codes, and cryptography, as well as collect and analyze foreign intelligence and conduct covert action! Investigate the use of cryptography over time. Use your new skills and reasoning to BREAK OUT of sticky situations.

Hello, my name is Ms. Leah Batiz! I am 43 years young! I will be your child’s Magic of Chemistry teacher for 2026 SUMMER SAIL! I just finished my 20th year teaching! I grew up in West Virginia and attended Elementary and High School in Calhoun County, WV. I attended Glenville State College, where my mother, father, grandfather, and aunt went, for 1 year. After moving to South Carolina in 2002, I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Charleston Southern University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education in 2005. In 2019, I added a Gifted & Talented Endorsement to my teaching certificate. I am a 4th-generation educator following in several family members' footsteps!

Hello! My name is Noelle Boilek, and I am very excited to be part of Summer SAIL 2026. My family moved to Charleston three years ago from the San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington State. We live on James Island and love being close to the beach and historic downtown Charleston. I am married to my husband, Rick, and we love exploring the Lowcountry together. I have a daughter named Emelia, who recently graduated from the College of Charleston, and a son named Ezra, who is graduating from James Island Charter High School this spring. When I’m not teaching, I enjoy hiking, biking, kayaking, gardening, reading, and baking. This fall, I will be teaching 5th grade at James Island Elementary School.
