The Library Program at SJSEMS

Elementary scholars (grades CD-5th) at St. James-Santee visit the library each week for their special area rotation. During this time, scholars engage in a wide range of activities designed to promote literacy and to develop a life-long passion for reading. Scholars utilize print and electronic media to develop essential research strategies. They also participate in a variety of makerspace activities to practice hands-on learning and meaningful collaboration.

Scholars in the Head Start program at St. James-Santee also visit the library each week for Story Hour.

You can learn more about the principals and standards taught in our library by reviewing the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) Shared Framework.

In addition to our regular Special Area schedule, the library hosts special events throughout the academic year to promote literacy. Please check out our "Calendar" page for more information on upcoming events.

Meet the Librarian: Mrs. Marlowe

I love being the librarian at SJSEMS! Each week, I get to encourage our scholars to read and learn more about what interests them. I believe that the most important part of a school librarian's job is to help scholars figure out what they're passionate about, and how to find the resources they need to pursue their interests.

I earned my MLIS from the University of South Carolina, and I worked at both the University of South Carolina and the College of Charleston prior to working at SJSEMS. Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have about our library program.

Library Artwork

You may notice some exceptional artwork displayed on our website. Many of the paintings and drawings that you see on this site were created by SJSEMS scholars.

For the 2018-19 academic year, scholars in grades 3rd through 5th partnered with scholars in Head Start through 2nd grade as part of the Academic Olympics program. Scholars worked with their partners throughout the year to read, discuss their favorite books, and to create artwork inspired by the books they read together.

Scholars also created artwork for National School Library Month which can be found throughout our website as well.

Please visit our Library Art Wall if you're interested in getting a closer look at our scholars' artwork. Scholars may continue to submit artwork for the website by uploading it to the art wall. The artwork will appear on the wall once it has been approved by Mrs. Marlowe.
