Summer reading 2023
May 15 - July 31
It's finally time for vacations, camps and quality time with family and friends! As you are making plans for all of your summer fun activities, we want to remind you to also make plans for reading. The purpose of summer reading is to encourage recreational reading to prevent reading loss, boost student achievement, and to create lifelong readers and learners. Research has consistently demonstrated the importance of summer reading and shown that students who read recreationally during the summer are better prepared when the new school year begins!
CCSD & Charleston County Public Library
CCSD and CCPL are teaming up again with this year's summer reading program, "Reading is Radical". Information and a list of summer programs at each public library branch is available HERE.
All SIES students were enrolled in the summer reading program at school and should see the "Summer Reading Kids" challenge on their Beanstack homepage. If it does not appear, please follow the directions for linking your child's account and enrolling using the link above. All rising 6th graders should be enrolled in the Teen challenge....the link above also includes directions for updating your child's account if needed.
Participation reports will be sent electronically to Ms. Santos, so there is nothing to write down or turn in when school starts!
In addition to the fantastic prizes provided by CCPL, we will also be awarding prizes to SIES students in the fall who reach each level (5, 15, and 30 hours).
Program Dates: May 15 - July 31
suggested reading
SIES does not require students to read specific titles for summer reading....we just want students to read!
But with so many books to choose from, finding the right title (or series) can be tough. So here are some places to look for excellent book suggestions:
Picture Book Award: K - 2nd Grade
Children's Book Award: 3rd - 5th Grade
American Association of School Librarians Youth Media Awards
Caldecott Award: K - 2nd Grade
Newbery Award: 3rd - 8th Grade
