Yes! Our library accepts gently used books year round. They may used in the library, in our annual Flip Flop Book Swap in the spring, or in a classroom library. We will do our best to find a new home for any book that is current, relevant and in good shape!
Unfortunately, no. Library books are bound with library quality binding to withstand frequent use. Our library books are also insured by our vendor. Please contact Ms. Santos for replacement cost, which may be submitted by cash or check payable to SIES, or through RevTrak.
We are very fortunate that our library is one of few elementary libraries in CCSD that is able to operate on a flexible schedule, which means that it is not considered a special area like art, music, p.e., etc. Instead, students are able to go to the library to check out books whenever they need. On certain occasions, classroom teachers may collaborate with Ms. Santos and have the entire class visit the library for a specific lesson or activity. Kindergarten classes come to the library once a week for storytime and checkout. Once they become more independent in the spring, kindergarten students will also be allowed to come to the library to check out a new book as needed.
CD: 1 book
K: 1 book (fall), 2 books (spring)
1st & 2nd grade: 2 books
3rd grade: 3 book
4th grade: 4 books
5th grade: 5 books
Students who reach the 30 hour level in the summer reading program are awarded a VIP library card that allows them double the number of check outs.
Our library thrives with the help of amazing parent volunteers who help with everything from checkout and shelving of books to special library events like the book fair and book swap. CCSD requires all school-based volunteers to complete an application and be approved, and SIES has additional required training. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact our Parent Educator, Lisa Marie Ferguson at Lisa_Ferguson@charleston.k12.sc.us.
